Deep Thoughts

What was your first concert?

108 comments:

  1. The Grass Roots. Ah, the memories of that. Four girls, probably aged 13, at a Grass Roots concert.

  2. Fleetwood Mac! I was in the very top seats with a friend and got chosen to go down and get the hot dogs, which were being sold at the very bottom of the stadium. When I got back, she complained that I'd forgotten the mustard. I remember that more than I remember the concert itself.

    1. +1 Lady H! This made me remember how much I went into hysterics whenever my preschool teacher would get her guitar out and we'd sing this and it got to the "Apples and banoonoos" part. I just couldn't handle the "banoonoo" hilarity.

My first concert was a small venue with Sum 41 right before they hit it big. My friend was a fan and I'd just never been to anything so I went and don't remember much about it!

    2. ROFL @gingercoconut! Baby Beluga all day errrryday! We actually have a running joke in my family to this day where we call my little sister Raffi. She hates sharing things so whenever she is selfish and not wanting to share, we sing the Raffi Sharing Song to her. LOL

      Delete
    3. That's awesome!!! Raffi always teaches a lesson! :) I bet she gets annoyed lol!!! And YESSS Baby Beluga, whenever I see or hear mention of a beluga whale I start at least humming the song....Raffi was really hypnotizing lol!!

    4. BWAHAHAHA
      Oh you KNOW it @gingercoconut!
She is the youngest; and even though she's in her mid-20s now she still gets super pissy when we call her out for being a Raffi!

I'm generous to a fault and hoped she would outgrow the stinginess. She's gotten a bit better though; baby steps.

    5. Lady H, you're amazing!!! I'm not gonna lie, I can be Veruca Salt on occasion. Hid my secret stash of mini candy bars and went ballistic yesterday when I found out Mr. Coconut found them and ate them all. Super tantrum...I should listen to the Raffi sharing song more often myself... ;)

Those pups are adorable <3 And I can tell you're generous by nature with your thoughtful links. Baby steps for us all and your sis...friendly teasing is the best way to get the message through!!!

    6. LOL shame on the hubby for eating all of the sweets! That is why you had to hide them in the first place, DUH!
Awwww...thanks; you are too sweet @gingercoconut!

  4. in terms of local, Ian Thomas, Dave Thomas's brother did a concert at some Rotary outdoor thing

in terms of bona fide concert The Cars - in a seat so far away, I did not buy them, that I could not even tell recognize the individual members of the band with my binoculars

and this is when I became a seat snob....

    1. Dave Thomas as from SCTV, one of the McKenzie brothers, eh

    2. Oh shoot I forgot Max Webster and Rush played my high school I never consider that a concert concert though

  5. Rick Springfield at the civic center in monroe, louisiana in 1985. Til Tuesday was the opening band. I was 7 and it was glorious.

    1. My mom and I actually relived our Rick Springfield glory by going to see him in concert at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth in 2009. He was still fucking hot and he put on an AMAZING show.

    2. Rick Springfield Working Class Dog tour--OH how I loved him. I'd like to see him again--I hear he still rocks out in his 60's.

    3. Did you read about his recent "butt lawsuit"? Lol.

    5. He was cleared of all wrongdoing because getting hit by Rick Springfield's butt should be considered a god damned honor.

      Delete
    6. Did you see Rick Springfield when he was in a season of Californication, the show starring David Duchovny, he was hilarious playing a version of himself.

      Delete
    7. I saw it. I don't think it was an exaggeration, though!

  6. Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Based on the other bands listed, yours is probably the least embarrassing. Doesn't Miami Sound Machine hold up pretty well, in a 90s kind of way?

  7. Cheap Trick....I was in love with the bassist. WOW, that was a LONG time ago!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the bassist's name was Tom Petersson! Lots of Swedes in Rockford, Illinois. Tom was a beautiful man. Didn't he quit the band, and then they found someone who looked just like him, and then he rejoined and they ditched the other guy?

      Delete
    2. Holy crap! You even spelled his last name with 2 s's! I always loved that too of course! I think he did quit and come back. Geez, I had literally 500 pictures of him on my walls! Then I moved on to being in love with Robert Plant....

      Delete
    3. @Z, Petersson was married to a German woman named Dagmar who convinced him that he (not Rick Nielsen, Bun E. Carlos or Robin Zander) was the real talent behind the band. He left to find fame and fortune, did not find it, and came back. But he's still a very handsome man - he's aged well.

      Delete
    4. Funny, I was just looking up Tom Petersson the other day and yes, indeedy, he has aged very well.

      Delete
    5. I partied with Cheap Trick (and the Georgia Satellites) right after Petersson rejoined the band. He AND Robin Zander both aged well. It was in their hotel room after they played Six Flags and he was in his Jammie's. All I remember is Rick and I dropping trou to show our underwear. No drugs were present as an FYI.

  8. Ugh. This is an embarrassing one. The first concert I went to - sans parents, just me and friends - was Toad the Wet Sprocket. We saw them on the UOP campus in Stockton, CA. Don't judge me, it was the early 90's!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I still like their old 90's music, dammit!

      Delete
    2. There is NOTHING wrong with Toad the Wet Sprocket! I've seen them in concert 5 times with the most recent being like 2010!

      Delete
    3. Love TTWS. Music still holds up Rose.

      Delete
    4. I've never seen Toad, but have seen their lead singer Glen Phillips perform. He was good. I'm FB friends with him too. He seems like a nice guy.

  10. I don't know which one was first; it was Doobie Brothers, Chicago at the San Diego Sports Arena, or Chicago and War at Balboa Stadium.

I do remember that back in the old days the San Diego Chicken showed up for everything. At a concert inside the sports arena someone passed the chicken a joint, he took it and stuck his hand way inside the beak. That little chicken must have taken the biggest hit ever because a cloud of exhaled smoke came out of the chicken's beak and it was hilarious. I'll never forget it.

    1. @califblondy, mine was Doobie Brothers! This was the old, jamming out Doobie Brothers, none of this Michael McDonald Ya mo be there shizz. I have a feeling you saw the jamming Doobie Brothers as well judging from your other choices given.

    2. I love the SD Chicken (aka KGB Chicken). He was always at every concert we went to in high school and beyond. I wonder what Ted G is up to now?

  11. New Kids on the Block. I blame my sister. A few months later I saw Harry Connick Jr. and his big band play at the Mann Music Center. And then that fall I saw U2. All were amazing in their own way.

    1. I thought my first concert was NKOTB too but in fact, it was Menudo at 10 years old. Then when I was 12, my 21 year old brother took me to The Rolling Stones "Steel Wheels" tour...loved it. Following year at 13 was NKOTB (alone w/friends). Good times!!

  13. Van Halen in high school. It was during the Balance tour. I spent the night with my bff and her brother drove us to the ticket place and then McD's after. On the way back we were sideswiped by some asshole who blew through the red light. My friend was in the front seat and I was in the back with the baby.

After the car stopped spinning, I got my friend and the baby's car seat out and flagged down somebody to call an ambulance. The car caught fire while we were waiting for the EMTs. As they were tending to us, the car literally exploded. The whole time we were in the ambulance, I kept talking to my friend to keep her awake, because a) I do that when I'm truly nervous and b) she banged her head pretty hard on the windshield. We were talking to the EMT about the concert and I kept asking her if she had the tickets. He started laughing and said, "Hey, man, are you hearing this? Their car just exploded and they're worried about concert tickets!" I said, "Yeah, because it's Van Halen. Duh!"

My sister and her husband just happened to be in line for tickets and saw us on the side of the road after the accident. So they hauled as to my mother's house and told her about the accident. Thankfully, I wasn't seriously injured and my friend needed stitches. We got a pretty nice insurance settlement, too.

Anyway, the day of the concert my friend and I decided to take a poster that said "We Almost Died 4 U!" We were 15! At the end of the last song, my friend and I went down to the front row and I was still holding the sign. As they were waving to the audience, Sammy kept trying to get my attention. He kept saying "I'm sorry!" and smiling that ridiculously hot smile.

Of course my friend and I lost our collective teenage shit and talked about nothing else on the way home. While my mom took my friend home, I called the national radio show that I used to listen to (yes I am a huge dork) and told him the whole story. Then he made me tell the whole story again on the air.

Later in the fall, one of my friends asked me if I had gone to any concerts that summer and when I said yes he said, "Yeah, I thought that was you on the radio. That was a cool ass story!"

  25. Dammit can't make "clicky" work today...

Tony Orlando & Dawn 1973-74ish (parents wanted to go and took me cuz I danced and sang to their music constantly) and mom convinced me that if I dressed up like "Telma of Dawn"

    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/emvVDC1-bwI/maxresdefault.jpg

("bun and all…even though I’m white") they might let me on stage to sing "Knock Three Times..."...needless to say my mom is a nut! But I didn't learn...

Then shortly there after....Shawn Cassidy...during concert, sent Dad on a mission with a personal hand written note to tell Shawn saying "I wanted to come up on stage to sing..."…Dad disappeared (to have a cigarette I'm now sure of) and came back and said "I gave it to them honey...just hang on lil' girl. I'm sure it'll happen..." Of course, Shawn blew me off…bastard….lol

  31. Wow mine is so very different from everyone and, depending upon how you feel about him, perhaps the uncoolest artist so far; Glen Campbell. I lurved him so hard. 1970? CLT Collessium (sp). Saw so many awesome bands thanks to mom working for a cool rock radio station. We always got seats in the first 3 rows for free. May have been America (Horse w/no Name) as a slightly cooler rock show.

  32. Blue Oyster Cult, UFO and British Lions at the San Diego Sports Arena. Not my choice, but my friend wanted to go. Not long after we bought tickets to see Styx. When we got the tickets we had never heard of the opening act, but by the time the concert came, their 1st album had come out and we were stoked to see ... The Cars. I remember being shocked at the smell of pot and people openly smoking. We also saw one of the teachers from our school there, which we found funny.

  33. I am Canadian, and before they got really really big internationally, the Guess Who played at my school, but that was technically supposed to be a sock hop all though no one danced...every one just sort of stared at them in awe. My first real concert was actually the band Ten Years After in 1970.

  46. Heart. Just after the release of their first album, I begged and begged my older brother to take me to Led Zeppelin, I drove him insane but he had a car and my folks trusted him to be responsible. So the big brother finds tickets to make his little sister happy. Sadly, Led Zeppelin cancelled their tour due to the death of Robert Plant's young son. My brother still has the tickets.
