The Hollywood Reporter recently gathered Greta Gerwig, Guillermo Del Toro, Patty Jenkins, Denis Villeneuve, Angelina Jolie and Joe Wright for a director's roundtable interview. Here is an excerpt:
You're on a lifeboat with a Blu-ray player …

DEL TORO It's so difficult for me to answer, because I will answer something completely non-prestigious. When I was a teenager, The Road Warrior [1981] completely destroyed me. It's the first time I noticed how the camera worked and moved, and it was a ballet, and I have never been the same. But I would probably change my mind halfway through the lifeboat journey, and I would go, "Where is Frankenstein [1931]?"
PATTY JENKINS Oh, my God! So many movies go through my head.
DEL TORO Come on. I did The Road Warrior.
JENKINS The weirdest one keeps coming into my mind. I Know Where I'm Going, [1945, directed by Michael] Powell and [Emeric] Pressburger. I love that movie. The design of it fascinates me because it's so romantic, but you never notice that it's becoming that romantic.
What did it teach you?
JENKINS The pocket of emotion of romance — the space where you get it and it's sincere and it's real and you just keep it from hitting the ground. You're right there in it. "Oh, my God, it's happening." It's what love is to me: It's when fear is mixed with desire. There's something so incredible about that moment.
Is love in real life ever what it is on film?
GRETA GERWIG Yes.
JENKINS I have theories about love. But fear and desire being equal is the thing. Film allows that to happen, but that's what it is in real life, too, although we always want to shut it down. Your desire is always to get the upper hand on [the fear], and as soon as you do, it's not so much love anymore. Film allows people to feel comfortable extending it longer.
GERWIG I am not choosing this on my boat, but Brief Encounter [1945]: She looks at him and says, "You looked like a little boy just then," and he looks at her and it's like, too late, they are already in love. Anyway — Singin' in the Rain [1952], I mean, if you are on a boat.
Patty, were you welcomed by Warner Bros. when you made Wonder Woman?
JENKINS I was. I mean, to get in there was a long story. I had first talked to them about it in 2005, and there were so many different chapters when they were and weren't going to make it. These tentpole movies, I feel it's more like dating than it is [like], "Hey, just buy my pitch." It's a serious commitment. I had almost done other big movies and had seen very little disagreements [derail a project]. So I was extremely circumspect when I came in to [talk about] doing Wonder Woman. I was really cautious. And when I first was meeting with them, they wanted to do something different, and I was like, "Ah, it's a shame. I don't think we are the right match." By the time they came back and realized they wanted to do something very similar to what I had been saying, it was a much different conversation. So I was extremely welcomed. I was very supported. And it's the biggest advice I ever give young filmmakers: Pick the right projects, because you don't want to end up in a bad marriage.
DEL TORO In 25 years, I have had one single bad experience: [Mimic] in 1997 at Miramax/Dimension. I learned that great word, which was "no," which is the same in every language, but I learned it. I agree completely with what you are saying: It's like adopting a baby tiger. A year later, that baby tiger eats your face.

Oprah Interviews Jennifer Lawrence
Oprah recently interviewed Jennifer Lawrence for The Hollywood Reporter's Power 100 issue. Here are some highlights from their conversation:
OPRAH WINFREY I read this wonderful book by Elizabeth Strout [Anything Is Possible]. And in it, she was speaking about one of the characters who was so embittered and regretful, and the line she used was, "because her life did not turn out the way she had expected." Is your life what you expected?
JENNIFER LAWRENCE When I started acting, I was totally satisfied when I was on a sitcom because I had a steady paycheck. And I was like, "Maybe I can just find a way to be on sitcoms forever." I was totally satisfied and good. I never dreamed that I could have this kind of career.
When you dreamed the dream, what did the dream look like? I used to drive home from church with my father past rich white people's houses — we'd be the last to leave our little church yard, and he'd be in this big, old, green Oldsmobile that I was embarrassed to be in — and I'd pick houses that I dreamed about living in, and that was a big dream for me: I'd have a house, I'd be able to pay my bills, I'd have two cars in the driveway.
I used to do that, too. I remember driving by big, beautiful houses, but I always dreamed of being there with my parents. I never imagined I'd be able to own something like that on my own. I thought for a while maybe I could be an interior designer — that was the only job I knew about because my mom was friends with an interior designer. I was mostly just focused on a family when I was little. I would have never thought I'd be so career-focused. It's not something I knew about myself until I started becoming successful, and then I wanted to become more successful. I'd make a great movie, and then I'd want to make more great movies; I'd make money, I'd want to make more money. It was a mind-set I wasn't ever aware I had until my early 20s.
How do you choose what you're going to do next?
It's chemistry. It's like meeting a boyfriend. Red Sparrow [March]was sexual, and I haven't done anything sexy or sexual. I've been afraid of that since 2014, when I got my pictures hacked. I just thought, "I'll never do that again. I'll never share that part of myself ever since it got shared against my will." And then when I said yes to Red Sparrow, I felt I was taking something back.
When your pictures got exploited that way, did it feel like you'd been robbed? Like you came home and your whole house had been invaded?
I would much prefer my whole house to have been invaded. That's what's so scary about electronic [things]. I have such fear with my phone and my computer and electronics. It's taking somebody's intellectual property but also my body. It was violating on a sexual level.
What's the best advice you've been given?
It was probably by you. You just said it under your breath. You were talking, and then under your breath you said, "You have to teach somebody how to treat you." That's the smartest thing I've ever heard.

Steven Tyler Gets Charitable
Page Six reports that Steven Tyler has opened Janie's House for abused girls in Atlanta, George. His charity Janie's fund, named after the Aerosmith son Janie's Got a Gun, seeks to fight the abuse of girls and young women. The shelter in Atlanta, the first that the charity has opened, will be able to house 30 girls and provide them with therapy and medical care.
Tyler's own experiences with rehab inspired him to open Janie's House; he states, “When girls come in and they’re broken and battered and have their problems and get out, they have somewhere to go. It’s a safe haven, and more than anything, it gives them a voice. That’s what we want in the end, for them to be able to figure out what’s going on and be good from the inside out and pass it on.”

The Hollywood Reporter recently gathered Steven Spielberg, 70, and some of the key women who worked on the film The Post (first-time screenwriter Liz Hannah, 31; producer and former Sony chief Amy Pascal, 59; Meryl Streep, 62; and the director's longtime producer Kristie Macosko Krieger, 47). Here is an excerpt of their conversation:
This film came together on very short notice. Why?
STEVEN SPIELBERG I read the script without any intention of telling the story myself or of committing to a production while in the middle of [another one,] Ready Player One, which was only half sane. But I was really curious about the subject matter. Ben Bradlee was my neighbor for years in East Hampton. He and his wife, Sally [Quinn], and Nora Ephron and [her husband] Nick Pileggi would come over and we would have these soirees. When I finished Liz's script, I thought this was an idea that felt more like 2017 than 1971 — I could not believe the similarities between today and what happened with the Nixon administration against their avowed enemies The New York Times and The Washington Post. I realized this was the only year to make this film.
KRISTIE MACOSKO KRIEGER He said, "If I can't make it this year, I'm not making it."
SPIELBERG My first reaction [reading it] was I got scared — which is good for me because fear is my fuel. The more frightened I become of something, the more I have to work through it. This was a topic that was scaring everybody I know on my side of the [political] street — and quite rightly.
What are they scared of?
SPIELBERG That we've lost the majority of good listeners, that our conversations have turned into skirmishes. We live in an area where we don't know a lot of red-state voters. Well, I know a lot because I have friends and family in other parts of this country, and so at dinner-table conversations outside of California, I'm completely mute or I get into these huge rows. The gray and the blue have become the blue and the red. And it is as vast a chasm as our nation faced before the Civil War. I've never seen anything like it.
MERYL STREEP We don’' know where north is. People disagree on what actual facts are. Whether this table is really a table.
LIZ HANNAH We need to see each other. We need to look each other in the eye and know you're not a villain, you are not evil.
Would you have had the courage to print the Pentagon Papers?
STREEP I don't know. I think you only confront your courage in the moment that it's asked of you.
SPIELBERG I don't think as an actor you have to identify with the character you're playing. You just need to find relevant and metaphoric comparisons to the person you're playing. I always find it a bit of a fallacy that actors have to be who they play.
STREEP Yeah, thank God. If you're playing Lady Macbeth.
Of the women you've worked with, has any shifted your thinking?
SPIELBERG Kathy Kennedy, when we first started working together. She started off as my secretary — you're putting it in the context of 1978.
PASCAL I was a secretary.
SPIELBERG Basically, I was a little bit of a hothead, impatient, and I would be hard on my crew — loving to my cast but tough on my crew. And about 15 days into shooting E.T., she pulled me into her office and sat me down in a chair and gave me the bollocking of my life. Because she did not like the way I was talking to the crew. She didn't care for my impatience, she didn't care for my sharpness. She said, "This is unacceptable behavior," and I hadn't heard that since a teacher in school or my own mom — and that was a big shift in my life. I became mindful because somebody I trusted and respected had called me out.
MACOSKO KRIEGER Kathy taught me how to work hard. She was always the first person on set, the last person to leave. There was no job beneath her, no job above her.

PASCAL I was a secretary.
SPIELBERG Basically, I was a little bit of a hothead, impatient, and I would be hard on my crew — loving to my cast but tough on my crew. And about 15 days into shooting E.T., she pulled me into her office and sat me down in a chair and gave me the bollocking of my life. Because she did not like the way I was talking to the crew. She didn't care for my impatience, she didn't care for my sharpness. She said, "This is unacceptable behavior," and I hadn't heard that since a teacher in school or my own mom — and that was a big shift in my life. I became mindful because somebody I trusted and respected had called me out.
MACOSKO KRIEGER Kathy taught me how to work hard. She was always the first person on set, the last person to leave. There was no job beneath her, no job above her.

Page Six reports that Coco Rocha, 29, and husband James Conran are expecting their second child together. The couple, married since 2010, are already parents to daughter Ioni James Conran, 2.

Naya Rivera Files For Divorce Again
People reports that Naya Rivera, 30, has filed for divorce from husband Ryan Dorsey, 34, for a second time. She lists the date of separation as November 24th; Rivera was arrested for domestic battery after a fight with Dorsey on November 25th. She previously filed for divorce from Dorsey in November 2016. The couple has been married for three years. Rivera is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their son Josey, 2, and wants the court to deny spousal support.

After years and years of denials, this musician is suddenly owning up to cheating on his famous wife.
The timing of this is so random. Or is it?
"He is anticipating some accusations of [his sexual conduct with women]. His strategy is to say that they were “affairs” so that when the accusations come, the women will be branded as vengeful ex lovers. He thinks that because he is rich and because he is now “admitting” that he “cheated”, that people will think these women are only out for a big payday. If he plays the victim, his fans and [his wife’s] fans will attack the accusers."
So the point of his sudden “admission” that he “cheated” is to redefine the actual victims as consensual partners… and to make him look like he is the real victim!
That’s an interesting and sneaky strategy.

"First she went to the bathroom and came back sniffing. Then she handed something small to him (I couldn’t see exactly what it was). Then he went to the bathroom and came back sniffing. Then about thirty minutes later they BOTH went to the bathroom and came back sniffing. He kept wanting to hold her hand and she was talking away the whole time. They were both wiping their noses but they both seemed very upbeat and happy and seemed to really like each other."

Angelina Jolie Looks Back on Past Relationships
Angelina Jolie was recently a guest on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast Awards Chatter. Here are some excerpts from her interview, as reprinted by E! News:
On her split from Johnny Lee Miller:
"It's so hard to explain yourself when you're still a mystery to yourself. Again, I think I've always been in this kind of struggle with being an actor, or being public. It never answered everything for me. It wasn't suddenly I got to act and then why would I make choices? I make choices because I still wasn't me. I still wasn't feeling a complete and whole as a person. After Gia, I separated from Jonny and I separated amicably and we're still very close friends but we were young and I was moving to New York. There's life to be lived and we needed some space to do so and help each other grow. So I moved to New York on my own, didn't know anybody and got an apartment and started to go to NYU. I thought I had expressed what I could and wanted to figure out who else I was. I was ready to kind of have a different life. I had grown up, ya know, Hollywood and New York but mainly Hollywood. I'd done what everybody said you should do, become an actor, this is what should make you happy right? People tell you if you look good enough, if you have money, if you have success, if you're an actor, this is… these are all the things that should make a person happy, I was miserable. I was completely unhappy."
On making By The Sea with Brad Pitt:
"We had met working together and we worked together well...I wanted us to do some serious work together...I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate. In some ways it was, and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on and it wasn't because of the film. It was something that we were dealing...things happen for different reasons, and things…why did I write that exact piece? Why did we feel that way when we made it? I'm not sure."
My life has been… I've had many, many extraordinary very fortunate things happen and it's also been many things over the years that had been challenging. So that wasn't a particular time when I wrote it...I had my mastectomy right before I had Unbroken. Over the span of that decade, I did lose my mother. I did have my mastectomy, and I did then have an ovarian cancer scare and have that surgery as well, and other things of course that happened in life that you go through. A piece of art can be something that's healing or something that's difficult. I don't know. I'm glad we did that film because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn't solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other."

"A publicist will never abandon a successful client who is having a legal squabble over production or contracts or interpersonal conflicts. However, they will abandon a client who is facing horrific criminal charges. That’s what is happening here. I don’t know of anyone who will pick him up."
If he can’t get anyone, we are guessing that his legal team is going to have to engage a crisis communications specialist to convince you that their client is the good person in this scenario and that all his victims are liars and opportunists.

The Silence Breakers. Time is recognizing all of the women who came forward and spoke out against sexual assault, abuse, and harassment over the past year. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Yet it doesn't have a leader, or a single, unifying tenet. The hashtag #MeToo (swiftly adapted into #BalanceTonPorc, #YoTambien, #Ana_kaman and many others), which to date has provided an umbrella of solidarity for millions of people to come forward with their stories, is part of the picture, but not all of it.
This reckoning appears to have sprung up overnight. But it has actually been simmering for years, decades, centuries. Women have had it with bosses and co-workers who not only cross boundaries but don't even seem to know that boundaries exist. They've had it with the fear of retaliation, of being blackballed, of being fired from a job they can't afford to lose. They've had it with the code of going along to get along. They've had it with men who use their power to take what they want from women. These silence breakers have started a revolution of refusal, gathering strength by the day, and in the past two months alone, their collective anger has spurred immediate and shocking results: nearly every day, CEOs have been fired, moguls toppled, icons disgraced.
