Mrs. Doubtfire, The Musical

Alan Menken has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he is composing music for a Mrs Doubtfire musical. Harvey Fierstein, who played Robin Williams' brother in the movie, is writing the book, and David Zippel, who wrote Hercules with Menken, is writing the lyrics. Menken reports that all is going well so far. Are you as excited as I am about the prospect of a Mrs. Doubtfire musical?

  1. I think it's a clever idea, and a much better idea than the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel Robin Williams was being forced to work on before he died.

  2. BTW, Sony was reportedly working on a Tootsie musical, last heard of in 2012. Maybe we'll find out what happened to that when the next Sony hacks come out.

  3. As much as I want to be cynical about this, I think it could translate pretty well to the stage.

  4. in this particular case I’m against, given the tragic end that Robin had. The role belongs only to him, can’t be another Ms. Doubtfire

    1. I don't have a problem with this. Look at The Sound of Music - lots of different Maria von Trapp's onstage, only one Julie Andrews. Legally Blonde - lots of different Elle Woods onstage, only one Reese Witherspoon. I think stage and screen are two different animals.

  5. Big the musical. Ghost the musical. Colo Purple the musical. Wedding Singer the musical. Priscilla the musical. Sister Act the musical.

Every single one opened on broadway to horrible reviews. Most were at a financial to the investors.

    Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

  7. Is Alan Mencken the go to guy these days for musicals? He's certainly doing a nice job with Galavant.

But I'm of the same thought at Gweeds..It could possible translate well to the stage but just cuz "Kinky Boots" has done better as a play than as a movie doesn't mean everything needs to be turned into a musical. Just saying...

    1. I thought Galavant was so good last night. Any news if it's returning? That last song about whether or not the show would get a second season was funny. I need to watch all the episodes online. I only saw two shows, but I loved it.

    2. I was watching the Firefly movie - Serenity - the other day and just realized that the guy that's chasing down River Tam, is also the drag queen in Kinky Boots. I love it!

  9. I think if you have the vision, money and the musical talent (writers, musicians and performers) you could transform any number of cinema hits to Broadway musicals successfully. Hopefully Mrs. Doubt fire will fall into this category.

Musicals (lately) are like so many movies in Hollywood these days. Nobody wants to come up with something new and original. It's all about recycling something that someone else has already done and had success with. It reminds me of sampling in music. They can't come up with the genius tracks of their own so they plagiarize or "sample" someone else's work. its fucking lazy if you ask me. Can you imagine if someone re-painted the Mona Lisa with dreads or facial tattoos or something and tried to pass it off as their own art?
