Melissa Rivers Has Officially Sued Endoscopy Clinic

Almost five months after her mother's death, Melissa Rivers has filed a lawsuit over the death of Joan Rivers. The suit is filed against Yorkville Endoscopy and five doctors. Page Six has some details from the lawsuit. Dr. Gwen Korovin performed an unplanned biopsy of Rivers' throat, and Lawrence Cohen followed that up with his own throat scope. This is when River's vitals went haywire, and instead of attending to her, Cohen took cell phone pictures. The situation continued to devolve from there. Melissa Rivers is suing for unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

  2. The clinic should settle this as quickly as possible. They are in a no win situation and all that will happen at trial is the attorneys will make a boatload of money.

What's really needed is an investigation by a medical review board, et. al. and some of these doctors should have their licenses suspended or revoked.

  4. Remember all that discussion about a doctor who supposedly took pictures of Michael Jackson under anesthesia? Can't remember who it was. Was it Arnie Klein?

  5. All this suing and money cant bring her mom back, but maybe it can prevent someone else from dying like joan did.

  6. Cell phone pics while a patient is under. How ethical!

This must be so hard for the family. Melissa said on FB that she really wants to help prevent this from happening to other people. That's why she's suing. Lord knows she doesn't need the money.

  7. She has to sue them. The whole thing was a mess and pretty unprofessional.

  8. I think this is going to be hard to win. Surely Joan signed papers beforehand stating she understood there was a risk and things could go wrong. You are supposed to sign that before any surgery. If they didn't get her to sign that then they are an even worse clinic than I thought!

I'm not taking their side. They sound unprofessional as hell. Just saying I think legally this is going to be hard.

  9. I read a few articles discussing this and there were a number of irregularities that you would just have to sue, and one of the things the articles claimed is that Joan's consent did not cover the additional scopes, but who knows if that was true but there were issues with that clinic in other cases and with the anesthesiologist who did not appear to be monitoring Joan is any manner that represented reasonable care in that field

  10. Joan would have thought the pictures were funny but did she seriously take them after things went downhill? The clinic is already shut down but I'm not sure about the doctors. I'm glad she's suing and didn't think for a second that she wouldn't.

  11. Good for Melissa! Joan was a needless death and someone needs to be held accountable.
