Country Star Ty Herndon Comes Out

When he recently say down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight, country star Ty Herndon came out as gay. He revealed that he has been in a relationship with a man for the past five years. Herndon was married twice before, both times to women who were aware of his sexuality. He is thrilled with the outpouring of support that he has received both from Nashville and his fans.

  1. I read another country singer came out because of his bravery. Good for both of them.

  2. Enty was Tweeting about the fact that Andy Cohen outed Kevin Spacey in his book and how it isn't right to out people.

  3. See closet people? The love people have for you doesnt go away when you come out!

  4. Billy Gilman also come out. Best known for his song "One Voice" that he released at age 12.

  5. It's really time for Aaron Rodgers. If country singers can come out, a QB can come out.

  6. I truly hope I don't get hounded off the site by saying this (because I wouldn't belittle someone for their personal beliefs). I'm a conservative person. Most of the conservative people I know don't wish anyone ill and don't "hate" people who are different than they.

Living one's life is challenging enough without all the self-inflicted inner turmoil. Do what you think is right for yourself. If you want to come out, do that. If you want to stay in, that's fine too. If you think it's nobody's business and you aren't comfortable making a public pronouncement, why should you?

Personally, I don't think your sexuality, religion, gender, political affiliation or any one thing defines who a person is. Are we kind to each other? Do good for others? Live a good life? In the end, that's what matters.

And please, don't bring up those Westboro Baptists, they are evil and insane.

    1. Yet again Karen I agree. Very profound. Cannot wait until this, and marriage equality are a non-issue.

    2. Great post Karen! You want to come out, come out. You want to stay in, stay in. It's your own business.

    3. But if all gays came out how would Olivia munn , Ashley Green and the like get a regular check??

Did Andy Cohen really out Spacey??

  7. KarenW, why would people be upset by what you said. I'm a liberal and I feel the exact way you do. I think there is more of a disconnect on what liberals and conservatives THINK each believe and what they DO believe.

Glad Ty can be honest to himself enough to tell the world.

    1. Oh Sherry, I don't know. It seems on some websites unless you believe exactly what everyone else does in exactly the same way (how is THAT even possible), one is accused of being everything from a Neanderthal to a - well stuff I wouldn't even type here.

I agree that there's some rabid obsession to put labels on everybody, sometimes without knowing the basic facts or careful consideration.

Whether it's Sean Hayes getting married to his partner or Ty Herndon coming out, whether it's a personal belief in the traditional definition of marriage or updating that definition, we only become better people by listening to other's views. I'm really so tired of those who try to make enemies of us all. I'm happy this site seems to be free of that.

    2. Shoot Karen we should put you in the charge of the UN. That is the utopian goal of humanity what you have outlined.

  8. I wonder if the Will plot line on Nashville is based on him and this probably wasn't a big secret in the industry only to fans.

  9. I think it is really sad that this guy had to wait until he was 52 to come out. And not only that, but spend the last 20 odd years creating a fictitious life for himself, even if the women he married were in on it and wanted to protect him.

BTW if you read some of the comments on other sites about this story it makes ME want to crawl back into the closet. A lot of people really HATE gays and are quite vicious about it too.

  10. Basil- people are always gonna hate, but i will never understand what they get out of it. We hv biracial teen in family, and she us going thru ignorant remarks from her fellow HS -ers. In 2014. At their young age. Sometimes I despair of mankind, i really do.

    1. Liddy- agree. Viciousness has become sport. So sorry for your teen's troubles. It's a wonder anyone makes it through high school in tact.

    2. That's awful Liddy. It's not big or clever to be an idiot. In 10 years when your family member is a confident and productive member of society those idiots will still be scrambling around looking for an identity.

    3. Sorry to hear about your teen Liddy. The only thing you can tell her is to try and weather the storm, not react back, and if she is a strong person, this sort of behaviour will make her stronger as an adult.

  11. I'm glad for him, but in or out, it's his (and Aaron's) choice.

  12. I've shared my nephew's coming out story a few times now so I won't bore you all again.
What I will say is that it's wonderful that a man can truly be himself now.
Karen W I'm exactly the same as you. I don't care if someone is gay, straight, bi, black, white, green or purple. If you're a good egg then you're alright with me. If you're a dickhead we'll have problems. It really is that simple.

  13. @Karen W. I think the tension you've seen is this: When someone comes out, there are always a few people who are uncomfortable with the topic and try to claim it's a non-issue and nobody's business. What they're really saying is, Why don't these gays stay in the closet and shut up? It's offending my sensibilities to acknowledge these people exist!

And, yes, that's not an uncommon feeling among CDaN posters.

However, being gay is still very much an issue throughout the world and, even in the US, it takes courage to come out. Whether we like it or not, many people still define others by who they love.

So, ultimately, it's not really an issue of being liberal or conservative. It's about respecting those who are different than we are.

    1. Agree with this. While it's no one's business if anyone is gay, I also get the feeling that sometimes when people say "Oh, you don't have to talk about it" they really mean, "Please don't talk about it because I don't want to hear it."

I think that it's great whenever someone comes out because that helps the people are want to do it too but are still afraid. Sadly, there are reasons for people to still be worried about coming out.

Ty Herndon had a really good song in the 90s called "What mattered most". I don't listen to country anymore so I don't know what's current, but I still like that song.
