What's going on in your world today?

  1. Just cleaned up my son's watercolor paint project and finished lunch.

I have a full day of piano students. Will wrap up at 9 and am hoping to watch Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce from last night after getting the boy to bed and maybe eating some din.

I also will be recording one of my fave Chopin mazurkas before my students arrive. I am pumped!!

    1. Now you made me look up mazurka. Learn something new every day. Thanks for this Karen!

  2. Susan, I forgot to tell you I read your story about your path to becoming a piano teacher, that was seriously cool!

Only a half day of work for me, I had a dr visit that involved labs. I have teeny tiny hard to find veins, so the poor phlebotomist had to apologize multiple times for the super tight band. She was really good, though, and used a butterfly needle, so it didn't hurt much at all. \o/

Oh, and at the dr's office this sweet little old lady named Dorothy turned to me and asked, "What's a truffle?" I told her it's either a mushroom or a gourmet chocolate candy. She laughed and said, "I thought so. Either way, a bit too high for my tastes, I'm a Cadbury lady." Cracked me up!

    1. Seven, her little old lady heart is going to break then because I heard they are stopping the import of Cadbury here to the US. At least we're not screwing up the formula. (I hope)

    2. 7 I have tiny veins too and they always have to butterfly from my hands. . Maybe that will help you next time. Always the hand veins.

  5. I'm so tired of the sub-zero weather, I could just scream. The windchill tonight is going to be -21F.

Last year we had fresh snow almost every other day, but very little bitter cold. This year, it's been in the teens or single digits almost daily since the new year with windchill taking it below zero on a regular basis. Please, please hurry spring. The winter blues are getting too heavy to bear.

  6. On a happier note, just watched The Blue Rose on Acorn TV. Thirteen episode series that was very good.

  7. I need reassurance that I made the right decision. Last week I bought very good/expensive Italian shoes that were perfectly fit and snug on my feet. So much so that I was afraid they would be too big after I walk and my feet swell into them. So I returned and exchanged for the half size up. The sales guy seemed convinced the smaller were better, but I have bought shoes too small before and they become unwearable. Now I am wearing the big ones around the house and they slip off my feet a bit. Is it better to do a bit snug or a bit loose?

    2. Sophie, it might be a preference thing. I think with running its better to have a snug fit. But everyday shoes I prefer about 1/2 too big. I just don't like tight shoes. My feet never ache, so I must be doing something right.

    3. Soph- they sell all sorts of inserts to deal with too big or small shoes. I guess half size lower wld hv bern better, but you wld hv had period of discomfort while they stretched out.

    4. The sales guy told me it was a 3 mm difference between half sizes. I was more comfortable in the smaller, but I am thinking standing around in my apartment in the winter is different than walking around for hours when it gets warmer. If worse comes to worse, i will get a half sole and heel pads. Thanks!

    5. My left foot is a half size bigger than my right, so I always have one shoe that's too big. I do the insole thing. Shoes that are too tight are a nightmare.

  8. Its snowing here, like it has like everyday for a month and the icicles are just beautifully epic! But then mr liddy and i read and saw report on tv that icicles do lots of structural damage so we had- by we i mean mr liddy, lol- to knock them down. Atill hv more to go. They were from eaves to driveway!! Mr liddy loved them! We went and had some chinese food before- mr liddy LOVES driving in snow- and then i went into target for playtex gloves, as I hv eczema on my hands if i dont use them, and i ended up with 2 kinds of gloves, refill for handheld dish washer thingy, paper plates and hair spray

    1. I have an idea, @Sherry. It's called my address. I'll even make you a meringue and some lemon cocktails and some seafood! :D

I love Meyer lemons. What I do for an abundance of lemons is zest them and then quarter them, then vacuum seal them both in wide-mouth pint jars. I've also done the zest in an ice cube tray but that didn't turn out like I hoped. There's a recipe out there for a Meyer lemon simple syrup if you like cocktails.

    2. Ooh the lemon simple syrup sounds awesome. I plane on doing some Moroccan preserved. Then squeezing a lot of them and freezing the cubes.

I so wish I could show up at your place for Cocktails Seven. That would be beyond awesome. Where do you live? Lemme mail you some of these a la Harry and David's.

    4. Sherry Here's a link to making Moroccan preserved lemons that I've been wanting to try (sorry no clicky). http://moroccanfood.about.com/od/tipsandtechniques/ht/make_lemons.htm

    5. Sherry: I'm late to the party on this, but you can preserve lemons in olive oil. See link at end of post.

I also made some Meyer Lemon and Red Raspberry Jam as well as some Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange Jam a couple of years ago. Both were excellent. They have a limited shelf life (about a year) and then the color starts to fade out. I've never made marmalade, but I think Meyer Lemon marmalade would be excellent.

This page has some great ideas! I'm going to try the Meyer Lemon sugar myself. Meyer Lemon Preserving

If you're interested, let me know in the Reader's Choice post tomorrow and I'll see if I can get a recipe to you for the lemon/raspberry or lemon/blood orange jam. A Google search for "Meyer Lemon jam" brings up plenty of options too.

  11. Here's another little heads up about a prescription (and now OTC) drug some of you might be taking. I have been experiencing weird anxiety attacks for the last few months, headaches, shortness of breath on occasion and trouble sleeping. I'd have problems for a few months and then it would go away-no problem but no explanations either.

Come to find out this fucking Flonase (nasal steroid spray for allergies) is causing ALL of the above. Since it's something you only use during allergy season I was only having issues part of the year. When I finally googled this stuff I found that these symptoms (also high blood pressure spikes) are all VERY common side effects (if you read comments from actual patients).

All this time I thought it was the allergies making me feel so horrible. I quit taking this shit and I can already notice a major difference. I swear it's like the doctors have no idea the shitty side effects the drugs they commonly prescribe have. Conversely they take away the pain killer drugs that work for chronic pain because they may have negative side effects. Bitch Please!
