Deep Thoughts

What is the most overrated tourist attraction?

  1. The Grand Canyon. Maybe I wasn't impressed because I saw it when I was 5, but it just looked like a big ditch to me.

  2. The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark. It's tiny, probably smaller than your dining room table. Mannekin Pis in Brussels is another snoozer. That one's probably smaller than one of your dining room chairs.

    2. Hey! Mr. Min Pin and I got married in Roswell! We hopped in the car, took a roadtrip without telling anyone, got married at the courthouse and did the cheesy UFO tour around town. We had a blast!

  4. Was very unimpressed with Mt Rushmore. Much smaller that you would think. I went when it wasn't busy so was able to zip up to parking lot, get out and look at quickly. Judging by how many lanes and markings on way up to viewing area I would imagine that in the summer it may take hours to do the same thing and can imagine the disappointment.

  6. I was really disappointed that there was no basement in the Alamo.

    1. Ha! That's because you can't fight in a basement! I couldn't resist the urge to reply to your Pee Wee's Big Adventure nod with an Inglorious Basterds one.

  8. Stonehenge. Go to Milwaukee's Shank Hall for a more entertaining exhibit of it. It's a classic Spinal Tap reference and it's great!

  9. The Vatican. I wanted the Sistine chapel and to get outta there. No such luck.

You are on a long, Ikea like walk through everything you don't want and every ten minutes there's another gift kiosk with the same crap as the prior kiosks.

Most of the statuary has been vandalized. Works from ancient Greece and Rome had the dicks chiseled off a a plaster fig leaf was placed over the offending area.

Btw, the Sistine chapel is a maz ing. None of me reading mentioned that there's equal representation between the sexes on the ring of prophets/sibyls. Given the non stop patriarchy of the Vatican (duh), this is a big thumb in the eye by Michelangelo.

ST Peter's basilica is a travesty of taste... clearly interior design by Liberace. The DaVinci pieta is so beautiful, moving and in the wrong place.

I can't speak about the Mona Lisa. See it. Italian Renaissance art is the stuff of Guido s affection.

    1. @QueenAnne- what pissed me off was the gallery of maps was super crowded and had tourist booths/shit for sale, which partially blocked the maps! I get mad thinking about it.

  11. The Leaning Tower of Pisa. total waste of my time (and I had to go there twice, with two different people). thought Venice and Amsterdam were dirty, but had some interesting areas but are overrated. I like the Vatican, however. (I'm Catholic, I'm sure that has a lot to do with it). You have to look at it as a product of its times. Even some of my relatives who are not Catholic loved it.

Loved most of Germany and France (although the people can be annoying).

Agree about the Grand Canyon - if you only saw it at age 5, you didn't get the full impact.

  14. I would have to say the Mona Lisa, as well. It's just so small and there are so many people. It's crazy because there is a breathtaking DaVinci painting that is literally like 30 feet from the Mona Lisa and everyone just passes it by. I can't believe someone said the Vatican! That was my favorite place to go when I lived in Rome. It is so beautiful, extravagant and totally over the top. The altar looks like a giant's canopy bed. No one will ever make art or architecture like that again.

    1. Michelangelo imagined a much simpler St. Peter's basilica than what we have. He took the commission on the promise of total control. The waited for him to die, took the plans and super sized the modest dimensions.

What he designed was significantly smaller and more intimate. What we have is a garish vaudeville.

    2. I agree completely! It is too bad that a Pope who was afraid of peen had them paint over a lot of his work. While I find that unfortunate, those revisions (for better or worse) have cemented themselves in history. Regardless, when you're in the Vatican or any of those places in Rome or Europe, its insane to think that people made that without any of our modern day conveniences.
