Update on Bobbi Kristina

Bobbi Kristina has been in a medically induced coma since January 31st. People reports that doctors are beginning to take her out of the coma. She will still remain on life support. Dr. Subhashini Ramesh of Georgia Regents University tells People: "They take them off a medically induced coma for two reasons - because the underlying problem has improved, or to simply get a sense of what the patient is able to do for themselves." Dr. Ramesh also stated that the fact Bobbi Kristina recently had a tracheostomy was a positive sign, indicating that she was not brain dead. Bobbi Brown has postponed his upcoming tour to remain in town for his daughter.

  1. So does this mean she's going to recover? Hope she does and once she heals(will be a long time after being in a coma) she does something good with her life. I fear she'll be permanently disabled however.

  2. I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on television, but how would a tracheostomy indicate she's not brain dead? That makes no sense.

    1. I agree it makes no sense to me at this point. It is more the sign of a family not willing to let go yet though the tracheostomy is used in other circumstances which I am not sure of - we all see the make shift trachs on medical drama with the pen because someone's breathing is obstructed after an accident etc. The one thing is we don't know what her brain wave scans are saying - if it is ambiguous or inconclusive, then that would leave the family in a dilemma.

Assuming she has some brain function, can you treat those seizures because sounds like those will kill her eventually anyway, seizures = damaged parts of the brains does it not? And every seizure does more damage? That is why it is important I guess even at a young age to express your wishes in this situation.

You can look at it this way - is it fair to keep a loved one alive but a vegetable and/or suffering to make you feel better because some people do this and they quote the Bible about all life is precious. Well if God had the only call that person would have been dead already. Never mind the economic implications.

    2. And I am guessing if your brain is causingg seizures that would suggest you are clearly not brain dead though right? Damaged but not dead?

    3. @Tina, it's a different thing. Your brain can still "work" when you're on life support, and still cause seizures, but the areas of the brain that make you a conscious person who can speak and move on their own are essentially lights out.

The only way I can think the doctor would say that the tracheostomy means she's not brain dead is that it's a procedure that is done when removing someone from a ventilator.

    4. You have a limited time to be on a ventillator because of potential infections.

  3. CNN is already saying they've had to put her back on the meds to keep her in a coma. As soon as they tried to wean her down, she started having seizures. I know it's a hard decision to make, but maybe it's time to think about letting her go.

  4. Brenda, i agree, but it must be so hard to let loved one go. What if the day after you pull the plug, person wld have woken up? I mean that shit wld haunt u day and night. From here its easy to say let her go, but from close up i dont know what i'd do truthfully.

  5. I read that also. She was having severe seizures when the docs tried to wean her off the "coma drugs", so they had to continue with the meds. I can't see how this can possibly end well.

  6. Oh man. :(

But what about "quality" of life?? *IF* she comes out of it, what will be the quality of her life? I feel for anyone making this decision but come on.

    1. Meanie- u r so right. When my mom was dying of terminal cancer- melonima, use sunscreen- i kept saying to my aunt i wanted her back. But my aunt said, what are u bringing her back to? She's sick. And she was right. Think about what their life will be like. Will they be in pain? Trapped in no working body? I hate to say this but sometimes decision is made by loved one is selfish.

  7. I've had a family member removed from life support. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I wasn't prepared for how painful it looked to have the tubes taken out and her to take her last breaths. She didn't die peacefully as you would have expected. I wish the doctors had told us more about what was going to happen.

  8. @Pink Cashmere- I understand your pain. I was there with my friend's parents when we took her off of life support two years ago. It was brutal but I got some sense of peace in that her organs went on to save others. Just an unspeakably shitty situation.

I read that Bobbi was believed to have gotten no oxygen for 10-15 minutes. I have no idea how she is not brain dead but I can't imagine that her brain activity is anything significant.
Bobbi was said to be spending $5k a week on drugs, her favorites being cocaine, heroin and Xanax. The seizures are happening reportedly as a symptom of benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome- so it's the lowering drug levels that are likely causing the seizures and that's why they're having a hard time taking her off the drugs. Her body has become physiologically dependent on them. That poor girl.

    1. Lady- my friends bother had a massive stroke and was on life support. Well it turned out he was secret alcoholic, and they had to detox him before they cld access his situation! Took 3 or 4 days, thats how much booze was in his system! By the time they were testing him, he had another stroke and was brain dead. Mb if that detox time wasnt needed he may hv done better. He died when taken off, he was only 53. How did he keep drinking as much as he was so quiet? He worked nights, and when got off everyone at work. So he didnt go home, he went with a buddy to a bar and drank til drunk and went home to bed. Everyone thought he was sleeping because he worked nights and he wasnt the jolliest dude anyway so no one picked up on it. Turned out under his bed were wine bottles, jugs even- he wld take a slug whenever and shove empties under bed. His wife didnt catch on cos she drinks a bit too and she isnt the brightest bulb in the marquise. No one knew he was drinking so much. Sorry for long post, this is about time of year it happened, guess its on my mind. The point us, like bobbi k, and my friend, when you alreay have so much crap in your system, it makes it that much harder to truly see where you are at. Sad.

    2. AuntLicky, my friend who went into a coma was also a heavy drinker and her withdrawals while in a coma were a surprise to her family. She went right back to drinking and smoking after she got out of rehab.

  9. Seizures generally happen within the first week after the last drug/alcohol was ingested while the body is in withdrawal. I don't know what drugs are given to keep someone in a coma, but like LadyH said, if she's having seizures because of withdrawing from those drugs, it's seriously screwed up.

  10. She's brain dead. If they pull the plug now then Whitney's mom and brothers get all the money. If Bobbi who is the decision maker now can keep her on life support (not a medically induced coma) for nine more years then he inherits all the money that's left. He's probably transferring her to New Jersey where you can reject a brain dead diagnosis for "religious" beliefs. He can also say that it's where Cissy lives and it's so she can be close to Bobbi Kristina. It's all about money at this point because she's dead and Bobbi Brown had no relationship with her when she was alive.
