Deep Thoughts

What is a fear that you have that you would like to overcome?

  1. Me, too, @Bally. I've never learned to swim because of it. Thanks, Mom!

  2. Spiders. It would be nice to not shriek when I smush one!

    1. Spiders for me too (big time!!!) but strangely I am not a shrieker/screamer I'm a cusser. I see a spider and I quickly throttle backwards with a simultaneous "WTF!..." accompanied by many other loud expletives. I spin on dime to queen bitch for someone who is scared sh*tless (and really laid back and sweet).

  5. I need to work on my fear of rejection. I got a publication rejection a couple months ago that I really wanted and I haven't bothered to try submitting again since. Which is really stupid of me but whatever.

In funnier phobias, I have veneers on my top two teeth. I had an Ilana incident a few years ago when one popped out on a Friday evening after I bit into a sandwich. I was "ruthless and toothless" until Monday and it was the worst. I am still scared of teeth falling out to this day.

    1. Lady - teeth falling out freaks me out. One recurring dream I have is of my teeth crumbling in my mouth. I haven't had the dream for awhile though.

    2. I have a deep fear of losing/breaking teeth too. @LAdy: what field do you study? Fear of rejection is human. I'm not sure it's a good thing to get rid of that. It just shows you care about what you do!

    3. Thanks Anarchists. I have got to start cranking shit out so that I can pay for my teeth when they all inevitably fall out in my sleep LOL
@Sophie Helene- I'm in the social sciences. My article was on sexual privilege and the applicability of OITNB for women in California's prisons. The publishers liked it but wanted something centered on theory. Either way, it was a fun side project I enjoyed working on. I can always send it elsewhere, it's not like OITNB is going anywhere for the time being.
I think it's healthy to fear rejection, but not if it stops you from actually being productive. The only thing worse than my failure to publish is my failure to not even try. I just need to get over being butthurt and move on.

    4. Oh lady, thats wonderful and i feel very guilty i havent written anything in a loooong while. Yay for you!!

    5. @Lady H ~ I had a veneer pop off in a restaraunt and I was outraged that there was a bone chip in my food...until I realized it was MY veneer. I'd had a filling fall out of that tooth and hadn't been able to afford to get the tooth refilled before the veneer popped off. Thankfully it's the tooth behind my canine but I still can't afford to have it fixed (unemployment sucks).

Losing my teeth is a major MAJOR fear of mine.

    6. If you've just coiled in to recover, you probably did not just "stop being productive". It's just a time to reflect on how to do things differently next time. They always want more theory!

    7. I also have a fear of my teeth falling out because I have some very old crowns, and am also unemployed. This is a realistic fear!

    8. i got a new crown Wednesday and i went home and slept for hours

  6. I'm terrified of the big windmills. It's really dumb, but when we pass them I live in terror one of the 1000 ft blades will break off and slice me in half. I kind of want to clothest eyes until they are gone, but that doesn't work when I'm driving.

    2. Well, I get scared that one of the ceiling fan blades above my bed will fly off because that happened before (in another home) and it almost hit my cat!

  8. Heights..Like IWish I can do all those other activities but climbing on a ladder or seeing my husband topping off a tree really stresses me out.

VIP..please don't squish the spiders...Scoop them in a cup and toss outside..This will help you conquer your fears. Watching them in their webs is also the key to just enjoying the work they do rather than being afraid. I too had arachnophobia but I have very little fear of them now. Not so much I wouldn't flick one if they were on me, mind you.

    2. Calif and bondy- in our other house there was a pretty big spider web near front door. So hubs and i said lets just leave it and see how big it gets. Well, it got like 4 or 5 ft big, and i guess spider kept reinforcing it, cos it was big and strong!! We were getting scared, but one am or pm it was broken and spider gone. So fear the large web, it will smite thee, lol

  9. I am deathly afraid of snakes. I can't even look at pictures of them and I have - on average - 2 or 3 nightmares a week about them. However, I don't want to get over this fear because snakes are evil and I think it's good to fear them.

A phobia I would like to overcome is my fear of bridges.

    1. Rose- went on school trip with one of grands, and i had a chance to touch one, so i took it. They are warm and dry. However i still find them creepy as hell the way they can just show up anywhere!!!

  10. Sharks. No matter what variety or size. I like aquariums but the tank that has sharks in it I stay a good 5 feet back from. I avoid the Discovery Chanel like the plague that week.

  11. Aw jeez, my mother did a number on me so I've got so many, but the top two are small spaces and heights.

I found myself in a situation with both height and small space I had a full blown panic attack. It was horrible and so embarrassing.

  12. Uh, everything everyone just said plus those tall, long bridges like in Florida

  13. I always fear that winter will never, ever end and I will spend the rest of my days wearing layers of clothes and still freezing to death!!

  14. I have a fear of flying that comes and goes. I am not afraid of crashing, just of being sick on the plane during turbulence.

  15. Fear of most things medical. Except dentist. Due to good experience with the dentist I had since I was a kid until he retired. His replacement is pretty good thankfully.

  16. Heights & not being able to get out of a small space.
OT my daughter is terrified of anything with wings!

  17. I have an extreme fear of vomiting. I haven't puked in 40 or so years! I read about it and what's weird is that a lot of ppl with a phobia of vomiting never vomit. I haven't had the urge since I was about 5 or 6. I'm just deathly afraid of it.

  18. A bit claustraphobic, wont sit in booth at resturant, when i had to have mri, even open, i really had to discipline myself. Not a fan of heights but it really doesnt come up. If im driving later at night, i dont like to look over at other driver for fear they will shoot me in the face. You know how in cartoons, like roadrunner for example, toon is running and accidentally runs off cliff, but doesnt fall but hovers in mid air and then plunges? Well im afraid the plane im on is gonna do that! Just stop, and plunge to earth! My fav fear is inside my head, and it goes like this: hey! Nothings wrong! My stupid autoimmune thing isnt acting up! I dont feel sick! I dont have to go anywhere and i have everything i need! Why isnt anything wrong?! Is there gonna be something wrong soon? Yes, crowded and unpleasant inside my head sometimes, lolololol

    1. +1 @auntliddy on the MRI claustrophobia. I had one 2 weeks ago (closed) and had to be sedated + blind-folded for it w/ear plugs in as well. I have to go for MRIs annually so that is my routine coping strategy.

      Delete
    2. Also +1 on claustrophobia in MRI machines; I have problems w/claustrophobia (really, fear of not being able to get out of a given place) and heights (fear of falling, or losing my mind and jumping), along with any kind of interpersonal conflict; I find myself avoiding all kinds of situations because I can't take fighting, and even the usual plotlines in books and movies can hit me badly, go figure. Oh, and snakes aren't evil--they're very important to the ecosystem, and non-poisonous ones are at more risk from you than you are from them--so please don't hurt them, just get away from the quickly, OK?

  24. Sharks, heights, and rats. I use to get so scared by rodents that even in pictures they would frighten me. I would get lightheaded and dizzy but that has slowly gone away so really sharks and heights. I refuse to take a cruise because I know sharks are out there...what if I'm stuck at sea?! Ugh...petrified! As for heights, I'm OK on a plane or getting on rides but if I go somewhere that has mountains and we are driving and I can look down and see a drop off...forget it! I break out in a cold sweat and get dizzy..hyperventilate! I would love to go skiing or just visit a resort in Colorado but the driving in certain heights scares me. I can't visit my friend that lives in the Hollywood Hills because of it...I'm useless! Maybe it will go away or I'll try hypnotherapy.
