  1. For the first time ever, I find myself disagreeing with Jon Stewart when he said that satire shouldn't be an act of courage. It should and always will be, because satire and humour are weapons that zealots can't use.

    1. I did not hear his whole statement but maybe hge meant you should be able to use satire without being threatened ergo it isn't an act of courage it should be a natural act of expression? You shouldn't have to give it a second thought.

Otherwise Mr. Rushdie clap clap clap clap clap clap right on!

    2. 7-11- and tina- that is what jon stewart meant. Being a comic or satirist shld not be life or death situation. Salmon nails it as usual.

    1. @SusanB, sadly she does not. Sherry said she tried to post to FrenchGirl and KJE wouldn't let it go through. :/

    2. And the worst part was I went back to find the post and it seems to be gone. But then I can't find anything there now.

  3. Those cartoons should've been in the ny times and wash post today. Hypocrites..refer to anti Christian or Jewish remarks as free speech, and ridiculing Mormons on b'way is applauded, but it would be insensitive to mock radical islamists. What crap.

    1. I agree, every one of those cartoons should be posted and if newspapers are to chickenshit to do it (and apparently they are) then there is something called the internet. Those assholes can blow up the internet try as they might.

    2. CNN made sure to blur the image of the one comic of Mohammed. Pretty lame.

  4. I've seen some links on Fox news , USA today gawker ket and a few others. CNN said they "didn't want to endanger any of their employees." This is one of those things you can see both sides of but yeah, they need to show some balls and show them. I've found the Christian ones incredibly offensive but haven't had the urge to kill anyone. Although I might give them a piece of my mind, given the chance.

    1. "Ket" of course is a typo. I have a new tablet and am not used to autocorrect.

    2. That was the point of the demonstration in Paris, I had to say I was impressed. If everyone gives the terrorists the finger are they going to kill us all now? So CNN are cowards. Why is Don Lemon still allowed on at night during big news days?

    3. I live in Paris and I also applaud Charlie Hebdo, but I do not blame foreign newspapers for not publishing "offensive" images. Charlie's editorial staff was the author of the images, and provocation is their "mission", challenging all forms of authority is a trademark of the French culture. Relaying inflammable images appears to me like taking unnecessary risk.

  5. The scenes of crowds in Paris today holding aloft pens and pencils was such an elegant response to the violence they suffered.Unlike Donald Trumps' neanderthal twitter comments

  6. Speaking of freedom of speech the word is that Bill Cosby did a great show in London Ontario last night. The consensus on Newstalk 1010 is that his career may not be dead, tainted but not dead, depending on what the legal outcome is of the accusations against him now.

    1. Not exactly. There was a protest outside, no protest inside and the theatre was only about half full from no-shows. But he did get a standing ovation from the crowd. They interviewed a few people and most of them (older folk) think he has been judged unfairly by the press, he hasn't been convicted of anything so until something like that happens, they will still enjoy his work. Fair enough, they paid good money for those tickets so why waste it. If I had bought tickets I would still go, mostly to see what would happen or if he would say anything.

He has a show here in Hamilton on tomorrow night, and there are people (very active in the community) who plan to protest inside the theatre. Not sure how that is going to work, they'll probably get kicked out, but they said if they protest outside, he himself will not see it or feel it. Now THAT is the show I would love to go to.

    4. Thanks Basil the radio people didn't mention it was half empty but they did say Bill is not going to get the deluxe treatment if any clubs will still hire him etc. Be interesting to see how the Hamilton show goes.

    5. I'll let you know on Saturday. This is big news up here in Canada. The Mayor of Hamilton said he wouldn't go to the show, and even the Premier of Ontario said the same thing. Of course, I have no idea if they were even invited, so it could be just politicians making noise to sound good.

FTR Auntliddy and anyone else, I firmly believe Cosby did what he is accused of. Hell, I remember buying Stevie Nicks Belladonna album in the 80's, and reading on the liner notes that the photos were taken at Cosby's house and thinking "I hope he never tried anything with Stevie!" Now, that was in the 80's when Cosby was HUGE! So how did I know about his reputation? I read it in the National Enquiror, a seedy tabloid, and no one believed it at the time. So this story has not just come out of nowhere and people are just finding out about it now. He has had rumours about this for decades. Did I stop watching the Cosby show? Nope Hey it was the Enquirer and who believed what they printed? But I must have believed it in the back of my mind if I was worried about Stevie Nicks safety. But also FTR, I WOULD go to this show on Friday if I had a ticket just to see how things go down. But I was never a big fan and certainly wasn't going to pony up 400 bucks to see what I could see on Youtube.

  7. I'm not going to Islam bash here, but am referring to the supposed small percentage of militant Muslims. For a bunch of people who have no qualms killing children or beheading journalists, they are remarkably thin-skinned. They are like that overly sensitive friend who believes everyone is making comments about them behind their backs and cries about it. At least the overly sensitive friend doesn't shoot you. Well, usually they don't.

    Please? ?

Oh aND the Cosby thing.. you know his time is up it's like watching an old dog slowly Making the rounds before they put him down. . If you're in that city you would want to go just to say you did *after the scandal* and take photos. . He has so much money that going or not going doesn't matter it's the 2 headed beast at the circus on his farewell tour.. you want to say you saw him and he wasn't looking good..
