Deep Thoughts

What is one website that everyone should know about (if they don't already)?

  1. beautypedia.com---it gives reviews for skin care products and tells you which ones are junk and which ones work.

    2. @LadyH & Kno--did you participate in this year's Secret Santa exchange? This was my first year, and I really had fun buying for my giftee!

    3. No I did not
@TACKY FRIES!!!! I was just wondering how you were earlier today. I miss our SOA chats :(

    4. I'm always here, just always late (and lurking). Lately, my phone won't let me post to blogger. Don't know what that's about. Congrats on your teaching accolades! I bet you are a kickass teacher!

    5. PS speaking of reddit SS and SOA--I received a huge Jax banner from my secret Santa. Seriously, the thing is 8ft by 6ft (or close). I have no where to hang it up. If anyone wants it, email me the address you want it shipped to (tackyfries@gmail.com), and I'll send it free of charge(domestically). First come, first serve.

If you live in a hurricane zone, it's a great website - it gets info from a bunch of other weather sites, including NOAA and helps you keep track of storms or potential storms. It's run by a guy who relies on contributions, it's sort of a hobby with him. He's branching out into covering winter weather as well and has good links to a bunch of local weather sites. Highly recommend!

  7. Reality Tea is good for Housewives recaps and I like The Berry for oogling cute guys. Anarchy rocks tho!

  8. I like Dlisted but the comments sometimes annoy me. The people are nice and everything but it is like they hate everything and everyone that is posted about. Its like what do you people ACTUALLY like? and then Michael K will post a picture of like Kelly from Saved by the Bell and everyone will be all "oooh ahhhh she is AMAZING!"-- a little immature for me......

    1. @derek, be honest - isn't that what we used to do at CDaN? :b

I always hated when Enty would fawn over RDJ like Himmmm was really a thing and not a ratings ploy.

      Delete
    2. we are a fickly group BUT we do like somethings and some people. An example is GIRLS. Michael K will post something and get 250 comments all saying the same thing and some brave soul will be like "hey I like that show!" (not me I never posted there haha)..and it will be cricket central. Or Angelina Jolie everyone hates her she has not talent blahblahblah and they will just go on and on....At least here we can debate why we like something and we are just a little more ummm positive!

      Delete
    3. Based on your posts about Dlisted, I don't think you've spent much time in the comments section. Especially Open Post. They have a lot of incredibly witty commenters.

      Delete
    4. I very rarely read comments on Dlisted. I don't know why...i just don't. Gawker/Jezebel and Anarchy are really the only sites where I pay attention to the comments.

      Delete
    5. @Rose, me either. I think that if I read the comments on Dlisted, I would never get to anything else. The comments are funny when I do check them out, but all of a sudden an hour of my day has disappeared and I'm on the same article!

I feel like I should pimp my cooking blog but I STILL haven't found a theme that fits perfectly. Grr, argh.

So, Etsy. Friend of mine sells her jewelry there and I'm in love.

    6. No kidding, I have been craving soup and first thing I see is hot and sour soup! I'd replace the tofu with miracle noodles (tofu and I don't get along so I sub miracle noodles which are basically kelp so the same thing, haha) and then you did a scallop dish and you love Barefoot Contessa. We are sisters from other misters!

My blog still has a meatball soup and a Thai chicken soup that I adore on the front page. I need to get that puppy fixed because I made seafood papparedelle the other night and 6 layer lasgana last night. I'm doing a rump roast cooked prime rib style tonight along with sweet potato gratin and cranberry spinach salad.

    7. @Susan: You have a lovely cooking blog. I will have to try some of your recipes out! But your Seven Emotions of Wasting Food posts read like my personal journal! Keep it up, hun! Thanks for sharing!

      Delete
    8. Thank you so much!!! Seven and Lady - You are so sweet for checking it out! Seven, I hope you get yours fixed up. Blogging is so low on my to-do list, but I love doing it. Is is kind of like keeping a journal. And it's great for me because my friends and family in real life always want my recipes, so I just refer them to my blog. I just wish I had more hours in the day to make it nice nice. We're hosting a party this Saturday. I just finished work. I'm wigging out. LOL. It's the cleaning that drives me insane.

I thought about doing one on food and hotels but I'm terrified it's to hard to figure out how to get it started. .
      7. What was that template link you had the other day..
Susan I will check your site out in the morning. I'm in bed on phone trying to get cranky sick puppy to sleep and stop fidgeting. .

    10. I use Blogger, which seems to be a bit archaic now. (I started my blog like six years ago after I fled the newspaper industry to turn my piano studio into a full-time business. I had worked two jobs forevs. I had a lot of downtime in the summer, and I love to cook and write, so it just made sense. Plus, food blogs were like all the rage then. LOL. Fast-forward to having a baby and ... free time. Um, what's that? I don't think blogging is hard because the tutorials for figuring out the coding are not the crazy. And I am not exactly a techie person. Some things were tricky, like figuring out how to get the Pinterest Pin button on my posts. When I finally did it, I felt so accomplished. My blog design is kind of lame. I really just run my blog for fun. I share it on my Facebook page and things like that. It's not like I make any dollas dollas off of it.

i think most are going to word press but i have to find out how to navigate that too..

    12. Blogger is a great place to start. My real life job involves techie stuff, so my websites all use WordPress. It's actually really easy to use - I teach workshops on it, including using WP as an actual website and not necessarily a blog. If you want to give it a test drive, go to wordpress.com - you can start a free blog there (like yourblog.wordpress.com) and see what it looks like under the hood. I always recommend WP. :)

    1. @kno thank you!!!!! I just looked up a doctor that screwed me after ten years. Long story short he wouldn't request an MRI which when I finally got it years later showed that I need a joint replacement. He just wanted me to stay on a million pills that made me a useless, obese couch potato with no energy or feelings. I knew he was getting kickbacks because there were always drug reps in the office who seemed to be very close with the entire staff. Much more than any other doctor I've seen. Wow you really just blew my mind thank you so much for this!

      Delete
    2. That is a great site! I choose my docs with great care and love both my family doc and MS specialist. And neither of them have anything listed!

    3. Thank you for posting that link, Kno Won Uno. I had no idea such a site existed.

    4. This one I will definitely visit!

    5. Thanks! Great site. I just checked on some of my docs and none came up. I've bookmarked it already.

      Delete
    6. @Kno- I remember NPR did a bunch of cool stories and updates on Dollars for Docs. If I remember correctly, the founders received a shit ton of death threats and have been socially exiled from the medical community.

The one thing that concerns me about this website is the potential for patients to doctor shop for physicians who take payoffs from certain companies and seem likely to prescribe whatever drug they are seeking. However, they will find other ways to do that, and the benefits clearly outweigh this. There needs to be more accountability for this shit.

    2. OK, I lied but unintentionally. The main character, a teenage girl, has to explain to her mother what Magritte's "this is not a pipe" means using a t-shirt as an analogy. Seriously, adults are not the idiots you seek.

  29. Myhappyplace is fun. When Game Of Thrones is on, a few days after, they do the episode as if it was being played out on Facebook. And it is pure genius. If you are a fan of the show (and Facebook) I do highly recommend! They changed to a shitty ADD-like
format (lot of that going around), but it's worth it just for the GOT posts.
