Charlize Theron Gets A Raise From Sony Hack

After the Sony hack revealed that the company has been paying its female actors far less than their male counterparts, Charlize Theron has successfully taken a stand against the practice. Page Six reports that Theron demanded she be paid the same as Chris Hemsworth for their upcoming movie, The Huntsman. Her deal is now worth more than $10 million, the same as Hemsworth's. If it's finally going to lead to equal pay for equal work, perhaps the Sony hack wasn't all bad after all!

  1. Interesting because in the silent era into the talkies the big stars, with a few exceptions, were women.

  2. Good for her. She was the best (only?) good part of that movie.

  3. Considering she's an Oscar winner, and he's not, it shouldn't even be an issue.

  4. Hahahah!!! Take THAT Sony! Honestly the only reason why companies get away with that shit is because everyone is told to keep their pay confidential. Don't talk amongst your co-workers about what you make. Then they brush it off as, the man had more experience. Glad she got them to pay up because neither of those is true in this case. Let's remember, she has an Oscar!

  5. This is what I don't understand. These actors (men and women) are represented by agents. The agents I'd imagine represent both men and women. They know what the men get, why aren't they fighting for their clients?
If I were a female Oscar winner and my agent didnt get me the same money as a co headliner on the first movie I would fire that agent.

  7. @Katydid, I agree about firing the agent. @Surfer, I agree about the Oscar. I have to admit, however, that I don't know whether she or Hemsworth is a bigger box office draw. If salaries were allotted to actors based on prestige or talent, Chris Carter or Catherine Keener would be multi-millionaires and a lot of big stars would be making minimum wage.

    1. Yes box office draw is the main factor in what actors and actresses salary wise and it makes sense from a budget standpoint. Oscar does not always translate into $$$$$. The Hurt Locker made $16 million domestic

The business reality is that most women, even the A+ list don't have the same box office draw that the top men but then I wonder if they have an influence on the revenues for the after market. If that is the right term or post theatrical release revenue.

  8. And still some young female stars don't think they need to be feminists. Sigh.

  10. You all make good points. Mb the caster says take less money and the role is hers!! You know how they dick each other over. Then theres less money upfront, but points- ugh! And the money is STILL in the stratosphere dont forget. However, GOOD FOR CHARLIZE!!!!!!!!! She should be getting same moola!!! See children, THIS is what feminism/ gender equality is about!

  11. +1 @IJU!

Totally agree, @katy - why do their agents let this crap happen? The agents get a cut, it would be in their better interests to get more money.

That said, men will ALWAYS make more than women (porn excepted, of course). Meryl Streep getting two role offers the year she turned 40, Jack Nicholson at 60 something is still seen as a sexy beast (ew). You all know that I adore Thor, but it's absolutely ridiculous that the guy whose big role is an action hero is paid way more than an Oscar winning actress. Though I do think they both should have gotten hazard pay for having to work with KStew.

  12. Well the first movie kscrewed was The star and Charlize part was minimal
if I remember correctly hemsworth and his agents fought like hell for 5 million for the 2nd but I guess after kscrewed got booted out as did Rupert he got a raise to 10 million and I guess Charlize role is bigger and or on part this time around since it's just the ice queen and huntsman. .

  13. I'm shocked that none of these actors are tied to each other for pay. Actor contracts generally always say "no one to get more than" or "most favored nations" meaning that whatever anyone else gets you get that much too. A big fail by Charlize's and other actor's attorneys and agents. I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes in representation over this.
