First Authorized Biography of Kurt Cobain Being Prepped by HBO

HBO is working on the first authorized biography of Kurt Cobain, titled Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. It is set to air exclusively in the U.S. in 2015, and then roll out in theaters internationally.  Frances Bean Cobain is executive producing the movie, which will include never-before-seen home movies and previously unheard Cobain originals. The director, Brett Morgen, was "granted unprecedented access to Cobain's archives." Oscar-nominated Morgen also directed the Rolling Stones documentary, Crossfire Hurricane.

  1. I feel like growing up in that era I already know everything about him and not really wanting to know much more. But good for Frances and her involvement. I wonder if she will let coo coo crazy be in it.

    1. It's a reference to an early Nirvana tape he made. As Nirvanas back catalogue is pretty limited, every couple of years this heck tape is used to get a few 'amazing rare early Nirvana tape discovered' headlines to boost sales. I think it's been discovered four times now... worth finding and downloading though, it's a fun reminder of the crazy tape to tape editing people used to do back in the 80s

  5. *Unless Frances Bean inherited all of the rights when she turned 18. If so, could be interesting . . .

    1. @CoBe she lost/gave up the rights in 2012. I do wonder though if Edward Norton ever gave back his share she signed over to him too.

  6. If it's what Frances wants, then I'm all for it. I think those that handled his estate were incredibly respectful to her while she grew up, without selling out his story. Now it looks like they have given her reins to tell what she wants. People are definitely interested still, just because he was a beautiful artist with such a tortured soul. I'm just surprised Dave Grohl is letting it happen. But then again it's on HBO, same as Sonic Highways, so he's still probably pulling the strings.

    1. Frances Bean moved in with her when she was 17 for a while...I'm not sure I would call that 'raising her' but they are definitely close...

  8. Have any Americans been to a movie theater in another country? It has to be a better experience than here?

    1. I have been to one in the Netherlands. It was weird with the intermission and it was just a standard length movie. We don't have intermissions here

    2. I saw Batman (Tim Burton/Michael Keaton version) in Cairo in 1989. The experience was reminiscent of the grand theaters of the cinema age. We had assigned seats, which seemed like such an odd concept at the time. It had a formal aspect that we do not have in the US.

    3. I saw a movie in the mall in Athens, Greece in the early 2000's. It was surprising how full the theatre was. It was a weeknight, average movie, had been out for several weeks, but every seat was taken. That is all, otherwise similar experience to here in merica

    4. It's the same as the US experience in Canada. If you can find an Independent theater it's better, but mostly one big chain owns them all. Price wise tickets are about $12, and 2 drinks and a large popcorn will run you $25.

  10. Thanks for that info, Sugar. Clears things up for me. Knew there had to be a meaning to it.

  11. Meh. Didn't care in the 90's, don't care now. My daughter has started getting into 'old' rock (I know, right!) so she'll probably like it.

    1. Define "old" IJU. Cux I'm betting compared to some of us, it ain't.

    2. She's 13 and anything in the 90's is 'old' now Sherry. I can't really say anything. When I was her age anything from the 70's was 'old' too.
Now I know how my mam felt.

  12. I think it will be probably very cathartic for Frances to make a movie about her father
