Bette Midler Calls Out Ariana Grande

Speaking to the Telegraph, Bette Midler was asked about young female pop stars today.

"It's terrible!" Midler, 68, told the paper. "It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous. I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it."

Midler went on to say that she understood it wasn't necessarily Grande's doing as much as those who managed her. "I wish they’d stop. But it’s not my business, I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold."

  1. I guess Bette doesnt remember her own very risque shows back in the day?

    1. I am pretty positive Bette is more referring to dressing up as a 9 year-old and simulating having sex/humping a couch. Quite different from risque-burlesque-y-type shows.

  2. Go away Ariana and take your meth face brother with you please!

  3. Love Bette! Love, love, LOVE her!! She can say whatever she wants when it comes to these young twits.

  4. C'mon Bette, show some love. It's not like she has Barry Manilow as her bff and confidante. You were lucky! (did you ever know that you're my hero?)

  5. It's ironic, though, that Taylor Swift is having a moment partly because she isn't half dressed and doesn't shake her rack and/or ass at the camera at every opportunity. It distinguishes her from Katie, Bey, Iggy, Miley, Ri-Ri, etc. etc. etc.

    1. You're right. Stalking potential boyfriends and writing mean spirited songs about them when it goes south aside, Taylor comes across as downright classy when it comes to how she conducts herself in public and at awards shows.

    2. But people focus on Taylor's music and lyrics not her cat ears and ass shaking

    3. I agree with all. Love Bette and dislike Grande latte. I read the interview, and she isn't being cruel( or trying to); just honest. And direct, as she is. Talent needs no explanation or rather- exploitation. True talent.

    4. Bob Dylan has spent 50 years writing songs about relationships gone south. I don't see a problem with Taylor doing it also.

  6. If sex sells the Ariana is going to fail. I don't think what she does is sexy at all.

  7. Bette paved the way for people like Ariana to even have a show

  8. I agree with Bette who's saying the girl is getting bad advice. The fact that Ariana looks like she's 13 and then performs like a prostitot is to feed the fantasies of an audience they are trying to capture..MEN.

Taylor's main audience (and most these your female performers) are girls so they're hoping to change her demographic to capture more market share. Plain and simple. Doubt Ariana has much say in the matter.

Read Pat Benatar's book and you'll see it's been going on for a long time. When she fought against it she lost support from her record company. It's tough for women n the music industry.

  9. Its tough for a woman anywhere. In my life i havevencountered sexism from the least likely men you wld think. It is just amazingly prevelent, and in show biz must be on hyper speed.

  10. I find all this over exposing, stripper behavior soooo unappealing.
And no matter how much an Ariana Grande sluts it up I doubt males are buying her Shite.
The pre- pubescent males will enjoy watching the AMA's due to it but I doubt they're buying a JLo's anything.

  11. If you look at women singers, the ones with longevity didn't attain it through sex appeal. Barbra Streisand, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, etc. had/have talent. They could sing circles around most artists today.

Madonna, Spears, et. al. may have been around for a long time, but their success came from lip sync'ed tracks, overly mixed studio vocals, skimpy costumes and overtly (or suggestive) sexual behavior. There aren't any impressive vocals there.

And frankly, a 55 year old Madonna and 30+ year old Spears cavorting around in a hyper sexualized stage show is sad, not erotic.

  12. And this is why she is the Divine Miss M!
And remember kids, when she did her 'risque' show, Bette was all growed up, and made that choice, not some woman child being managed by a grown ass man named Scooter.

  13. Nonsense! Grande looks mid 30s with all the makeup she wears

  14. Reminiscent of Sinead O'Connor calling out Miley Cyrus. Truth hurts sometimes.

  15. Bette is awesome! It would be interesting to see what would happen if she took Grande under her wing, ripped those damn cat ears off her head, and became her mentor. She seems desperately in need of a serious female role model.

And fwiw, pretty much every guy I know between 20-40 is creeped out by Ariana Grande. It's something about the fact she is in her early 20's, yet looks like a contestant from Toddlers & Tiaras.

  16. I agree with Bette. Ariana Grande Latte looks and acts ridiculous. I was disappointed when I went to Whole Foods today to do Thanksgiving shopping (I know, I'm an idiot) they're pushing her CD at the registers. WTF? Really? Usually that space is confined to African Beats or Mandolin Music to Mate to....

  17. Ariana looks like a sexed up Bratz doll.

  18. Ariana is a short-term cash grab by a major label. She doesn't have staying power. She's the latest in a long line of formulatic artists-of-the-hour. Two years from how, she'll be a has-been. there's nothing distinct about her.
