RIP Lip Smackers

As of March 29th, Lip Smackers will no longer be available in the US. The Huffington Post reports that Bonne Bell is closing their operations in Westlake, Ohio. After March 29th, Lip Smackers will only be available in Asia, Europe, and Australia. What was your favorite flavor?

  1. Oh no! Lip Smackers were an integral part of my 12th and 13th year of life. I remember going to the mall with my bestie every week and picking a new flavour lol. My fav's were the classic vanilla, ice cream cake and cotton candy :p

  2. How sad. No more Dr. Pepper lip smackers. That was my "lipstick" when I was in high school.

  3. I'm not sure I ever had any LipSmackers. I would think Strawberry if they had that flavor which I am sure they did. How come you never see apple flavor stuff? Always watermelon or berry but rarely apple. I need to go get an apple fritter...

  4. All the popular girls had strawberry, but I wanted Dr. Pepper so that's what I got. I did go with the enormously popular bubblegum for lip gloss, though.

  5. I loved Lip Smackers as a kid too, but I think they're too full of chemicals for today's hip kids. There was a rip-off version called Baby Lips that all the girls in my daughter's class were throwing out after it was revealed they contained chemicals that could alter your hormones. At any rate, what's really hip among 10-year-olds now is EOS lipglosses. Not sure if they contain the same stuff.

  7. I like cherry roll on gloss. Idk if it was lip smackers or maybelline, but that stuff made your lips look like an oil slick. Lol

  9. My favorite flavor was Dr. Pepper. My friends and I would take our allowance, walk to the mall, and then try many flavors before finally deciding on which new flavor to get. This announcement is making my lips feel chapped, and I'm craving some Lip Smackers!

    1. I hope they don't announce Dittos are going out of business, because I might be compelled to go looking for a pair.

  12. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Everything lately is a conspiracy to make me feel old! (I am old.) In the 70s I loved everything strawberry - Strawberry lip smacker, strawberry oil slick gloss, strawberry suave shampoo... I did also have the cherry oil slick rollerball gloss, & I remember Dr. Pepper and 7-Up lip smacker. Oh, & bubble gum lip gloss! In the 90s, I had this stuff from Bonne Bell called "lip lix" & I loved it, in sherbet or surebet... I still have the tube, I check the internet and e-bay for it. It was the perfect color. These days, I love that rose salve stuff.

    1. In yet another manifestation of my (predictable) mid-life crisis (& ongoing treatment for depression/anxiety/PTSD), I went ape creating a "Happyland" of stuff on Pinterest in December. One whole board is all those goofy, happy 70s memories like Lip Smackers.

  13. Every Christmas I would get the giant long plastic sleeve with LipSmackers stacked in it. I had the ones you could hang around your neck and they were originally a really fat tube not the skinny ones of today. I had a grape one and I still remember it. I also had those little square cubes of super shiny metallic silver lipgloss and the rolling ball lip glosses too. Robins egg blue eye shadow was also on my dresser. I wore more makeup in 7th grade than I do today...

    1. Memories! My first eye shadow in 7th grade - '75/'76 - was robin's egg blue! I remember those big tubes of lip smackers you could wear around your neck!! The 7-Up flavor was in the big tube! Remember how "Life Savers" candy came in a "storybook" & was always a Christmas stocking stuffer? :)
When I was 17, my Mom got totally fed up with my cheap makeup - by then, I loved new-wave and using a half-pound of black kohl pencil on my eyes, I looked like a stoned raccoon - so she marched me to the Clinique and Lancome counters and made me get "makeovers" & a bunch of high-quality makeup... which I then very happily wore with... a half-ton of black kohl eye makeup!! :) :) :)
