Deep Thoughts

Do you watch the news? If so, do you get the news from just one channel, or multiple channels?

  1. I watch NBC Nightly News for mainstream "news", Rachel Maddow for commentary, and The Young Turks for real news.

  2. I dabble in all news channels. I like The Five on Fox, but I tend to watch that more in the summer when I'm not working through it.

We watch Philly news for the weather.

The Brian Williams stuff is insane. I wonder if he was hallucinating from sleep deprivation and being in a war zone or if he straight up lied. I totally think NBC News has known his story was false. I don't understand how the charade has been going on for so long.

  3. If it's not been reported on the BBC then it hasn't happened

  4. I also dabble in all news stations- MSNBC, BBC, cnn- even Fox, usually for laughs- and local. Also read 2 newspapers a day and read online news. Its just something ive always loved, altho i have cut back last year or two. Been reading the same paper since im about 5 years old.

  5. Minpin- the lying is bad but i can understand it. I had a job where i worked full time, taking 20 calls an hour. Believe me, at end of day, your mouth is operating independently from your brain- you are just spouting, you dont know wth is coming out! Lol

  6. CNN on the weekends, ABC every morning.

I'm torn on this Brian Williams thing. I've always liked him and I'd hate to see him go out like this. It must be bad if Tom Brokaw is pissed.

    1. @califblondy - I don't see how they can do anything else but remove him. He's gone from reporting the news to making up the news. How could one trust anything he says at this point? Apparently, his coverage of Katrina is being disputed by people who where there (e.g. seeing a body floating past his hotel in a part of the city that didn't flood). His credibility is shot, and unless they act quickly, the NBC's will be too. They've made stuff up in the past (remember the 1993 staged truck report?), so they can't afford to keep getting hit with questions about their integrity.

  7. I watch the news. I generally watch Fox News because I find they cover a lot of stories that are not being reported elsewhere. I also read a lot of news online from bona fide sources. If something I see, hear or read causes my inner 'danger Will Robinson' alarm to go off, I'll start searching for more in-depth reporting on the subject.

  8. Oh boy. His claims about Katrina are coming under fire now, too. I feel like this story is going to be huge.

I'm completely speculating, but I could see how a person covering a war or a really traumatic situation could just lose their rational thinking. But, what I don't understand is if he had a crew with him, than how did this story stand the test of time? Why is it being disputed now? I just think there's a shady coverup going on in this. And now, the shit is hitting the fan.

  9. I tend to get my news from the internet. I quit watching my local news when all the local stations became ESPN wannabes. Every night, regardless of what happened that day, the top story is University of Tennessee sports. The network news isn't much better. All their news programs are now part of their entertainment divisions, so all they do is talk about movies and TV shows their parent company produced.

I can go to Google News and, in thirty minutes, get more news than I could get in an hour of watching the evening news.

Also, I don't have to watch all those Viagra and Cialis commercials.

    1. These days, it's more like you buy the ads and get the abbreviated news for free. Print have been decreasing staff left and right in the past few years. They don't do the in-depth coverage the way they once did.

    2. My parents read two papers every day. I bought them a laptop a few years back just so they could read new online. It's now the DJ party music laptop. I never could get them to use it.

    3. I get the local weekly paper every week or so. You gots to know what is going on in your town.

My husband and I are newspaper editor retirees and we don't get a daily anymore. We suck. I know. I read everything online.

    5. I'm that age between my parents, who know there's paperless news out there but carry on regardless, and my children, who are mystified by the notion of going out every day to "pay"for news that can be read and digested at leisure in a physical form

    6. auntliddy - My Husband and I worked for the Gannett Corp. for a good decade. And I can tell you, it's a bad scene. I just read that they're trying to sell the USA Today/company headquarters in Virginia. God. Working for that company was so stressful. I'm getting an ulcer just thinking about it. I met amazing people at newspapers but it is a tough racket for sure. People just want the news for free. Online. All the time. Nobody wants to pay for the news.

  11. I get my news primarily from HBO. Vice, John Oliver, and Bill Maher! Stopped watching the morning news before work about a year ago, and started watching last night's WWHL in the mornings. Much better way to start the day!

  12. I get my news from two mobile applications that aggregate. FlipBoard and NextDraft. CNN is becoming a joke and I refuse to watch Fox b/c they employ so many nasty people to head their shows. Oh, and Google news for specific items.

  13. Get updates from BBC every hour. I miss newspapers over coffee.

    1. Last time I watched the BBC they were still decent. I used to watch them frequently but don't anymore really because I quit watching whatever else I used to watch before the news on the BBC.

  15. I used to subscribe to the Times Picayune Sunday paper, and a local New Orleans magazine when I was going down there quarterly. My friends down there were always surprised I was so up to date on goings on in their town.

  16. I do like the funny stuff - Stewart, John Oliver, Maher, etc. BBC, NYT, NPR on the net.

I used to watch Rachel Maddow, but I dunno - that whole format is starting to feel dated. I like Al Jazeera America. Really good reporting. It's what "the news" on TV used to be like. No mugging, no insipid side-talk, no hype. I'm a fan.

  17. @auntliddy how do you convince yourself you were in a chopper that was shot down and crashed, when indeed you were not? On my most tired, drunkest day I could not be convinced I experienced something like that. (Much less keep repeating it over and over).

  18. I watch the local news every night just so I have some idea of what is going on where I live. I am Canadian, but have cable, and I miss Tom Brokaw. Not only was he handsome, but he was a great newscaster and when things in the world were going wrong he was the one I tuned into to hear the bad news from.

  20. I still get 2 daily newspapers delivered --I love the ritual, & actually cutting out articles /recipes of interest-- & the crossword puzzles- i read all of the outlets on the internet & I like BBC & my 2 local news that then go into NBC & ABC
