Here is some good news for the holidays: Tom Brokaw has announced that his cancer is in remission, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Earlier this year, he announced that we was battling multiple myeloma.
That's really great news, but my FIL has the same kind of cancer...and remission is only temporary. It's essentially a terminal cancer, though it can be treated for several years. My FIL was diagnosed in August 2011 (with a 3-4 year life expectancy), had his first bone marrow transplant in July 2013, and expects to have his second and final transplant sometime in summer 2015. That should give him another 1-2 years. It's way more time than we thought we'd get. So, this is all to say that it's fantastic news that Tom Brokaw is responding to treatment, but calling remission for this particular disease is a little misleading.
That's such great news... My father passed from complications of the same disease. :(
