Johnny Depp Hangs With Real Life Blow Kingpin

Johnny Depp played George Jung in the move Blow, and hung out with him over the weekend. After serving 20 years in jail, Jung is now 72. After Depp reached out to catch up, the former coke dealer hung out at Depp's Downtown Los Angeles loft, reports TMZ. Amber Heard was there as well; they all chatted about poetry, books, and reminisced about Blow's late director Ted Demme.

  1. Depp just completely puts me to sleep. And I used to be a fan - used to see every movie he was in. Now I actively go out of my way to avoid him.

BTW, just read a good biography of River Phoenix the other day. The bio noted how little River Phoenix is remembered, in part because none of his films have turned out to be classics (with the possible exception of 'Sneakers', or perhaps 'Stand By Me', in which he was very young.) At the time of his death, people thought he would be a James Dean-like 'He died too young' figure. And then (and this is the book's conclusion), Kurt Cobain died just a few weeks later. Kurt, whose songs still hold up, apparently won the role as the 90s White Skinny Martyr.

    1. I feel the same way about Depp. I LOVED him for a good portion of my life all the way up until the Pirate movies. Now he is just annoying and I honestly never thought I would say that.
In regards to River, I love that boy. Running on Empty, My Own Private Idaho and The Thing Called Love all in my DVD collection.

    2. 'My Private Idaho' could definitely be called a classic. Does anyone know if young LGBTQ kids watch it today? It's a little subtle compared to contemporary film - 'I love you, man' - but the message is still strong.

    3. I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen My Own Private Idaho.

    4. One of my favorite movies ever is The Mosquito Coast with River and Harrison Ford. A movie nobody remembers. I just read Corey Feldman's BIO and he said the last time he saw River he knew something was wrong. Corey also didn't like River's GF Martha Plimpton and they booted heads on the Goonies set. Not that I blame her. All Corey could keep blabbing about was Michael Jackson. I'd have told him to shut the F up too.

    5. @JBE: I loved Mosquito Coast! I read the book before I saw the movie and was sure they were going to futz it up but they did a good job.

Martha Plimpton is amazing. I loved her in Minority Report and on Raising Hope (RIP, I will miss my beloved Garrett Dillahunt). Both Coreys had a good thing and unfortunately the H'wood beast ate them alive.

    6. I read "Last Night at the Viper Room" Its sad. Im still not over River Phoenix's death. I often think DiCaprio has the career Phoenix could have had. Such a waste of talent.

    7. A few years before his death, my ex and I were down in New Orleans for Jazz Fest and I was strolling through the French market, checking out the produce and crawfish. I happened to glance over and River Phoenix was standing at one of the stalls across from me. He looked really dirty and disheveled. Naturally my ex and the friend that had come down with us were back at the apartment watching soccer. River looked about as grungy as Depp does these days.

  2. I love love love the movie Blow! And it's the last Johnny Depp movie I've seen. I hope George Jung finds a different path of raising funds. Wonder if he ever sees his daughter?

    Sorry to ramble....

  3. Jessi, I'm exactly the same! Loved me some Depp, I still love The Tourist and Finding Neverland, but the pirate movies were silly and bored me. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was just as whacked as the Gene Wilder original (but I still adore Gene Wilder).

It's weird to read about geriatric coke dealers.

  5. Depp isn't relevant anymore. After he sold out to the pirate movies that was it. I'm sure he's still an ok guy but with his mid life crisis girl Amber he's lost all his hot.

  6. Agree about previously admiring Depp and currently think he is the douchiest of douchebags along with Sean Penn.

  7. In all honesty, I don't mind the Pirate movies. It's the stuff he's done lately that screams narcissistic douchebag going through a midlife crisis that bothers me. (I feel bad for his kids.)

  8. I feel bad for Jung. All that money scummed by the Noreiga government. That is why Bush I brought him down. Lots of rich people were hiding money in Panamanian banks and oceanfront real estate.

    1. I don't feel sorry for him. How many people died because he imported all that coke into the US?

    2. @Ms. : Mostly people who wanted to die or were too stupid to live.

  9. I loved the first pirate movie but the other two, not as much. I can see wanting to do movies your kids can enjoy, nothing wrong with that. I just don't think the writing was as good for the second two. I give them credit for keeping the cast intact for the 2nd one because that was a lot of what I liked about the original was the cast. By the 3rd movie, I don't even recall WHO was in it. Transcendence was dull and I don't think he's done anything really good since Finding Neverland. Johnny does better when paired up with a strong cast. When it's just him he tends to really go off the rails and be a bore.

  10. I think that if Jonny was still with his baby mama he would be considered hot -- quirky, but a family man. It's the mid-life crisis that's list the hot. Not that I approve. I think he's gross now...

  11. i loved blow.. it's one of the only penelope cruz movies i've ever liked
but he jumped the shark soon after
he looks like an old puffy penguin with scarves and vests to hide his pudge but
guuurrll there is no hiding that.. he walks like a puffy scarvy penguin too..

good to see his "in home sobriety" is holding up with that heinekin.. at least they cropped the blow out before selling the photo to tmz.. props for saving his pr that one
