Beastie Boys Sue Monster Energy, Round 2

After successfully winning a $1.7 lawsuit against Monster Energy Drink for unlawfully using their songs, the Beastie Boys lawyers are going back to court to get the energy drink manufacturers to pay the $2.5 million they racked up in legal fees from the initial lawsuit. Page Six reports that after a jury awarded the money seven months ago, the lawyers are going back to court because they assert that Monster dragged out the initial proceedings instead of settling, which ultimately drove up the costs.

  1. Rich people problems. The closet I got to lawsuit was when i threatened the man whi made my slipcovers with small claims court because after a month he still hadnt delivered my throw pillows, lol. Came the next day. I asked him, why did i have hv to threaten court? What was the delay? "Oh , you know, you get busy," was his illuminating answer.

  3. LOL @ethorne & @auntliddy!

This is the numbers game. Lawyers' fees start in the three digit range (per hour), and Monster dragged it out b/c lawyers' fees weren't included in the settlement, so now the lawyers are suing for their time and $$$.

  4. Good for them. They have always made it clear that they didn't want their music used.

  5. OT: Is it just me or has there been very little snark-worthy gossip here lately? Not many interesting news items to really have a good discussion about either.

    1. It's January, always a slow month. Awards are starting up, so there should be more snark worthy gossip coming soon.

Possibly snark/gossip worthy, I was reading yesterday that Tea Leoni is widely known to be gay but married David D and had kids with him. Then he has "sex addiction" (hogwash) and is on Reddit with Gillian posing in a hotel bed, now the divorce is nearly (or already?) finalized, and hey whaddya know, they're talking about an X-Files reboot with the originals. The tea was that Tea (haha) was the reason the second movie sucked.

    3. A reboot of the X-Files is like another TLC album, unnecessary.

I never missed The X-Files when it was on and saw the first movie. They waited too long for the second movie (six or seven years?) and interest had shifted to other things.

I used to watch 24 religiously too, but after a four year gap, I had no interest in the last go round.

  6. I find it hard to believe the lawyers weren't already compensated. Monster energy was stupid for even using the song without permission. They probably figured they could get it cheaper in a lawsuit than with permission which the BB's would never have given.

  7. Legal costs however are an issue that should be brought up with the trial judge not as an after thought unless they thought the judge would not be favourable to their argument, I've never heard of chasing after legal costs after the final judgment and court order on the case has been rendered. You can make a submission about legal costs after the jury renders it verdict.
