You might be saying to yourself, "Didn't Barry Manilow come out when he married Garry Kief two years ago?" Apparently no; the marriage was only reported on, sans a statement from Barry. But I'm all for someone coming out in whatever way they need to, so if Barry Manilow is ready to come out on the cover of People magazine at the age of 73, I am here for it. Here's what he had to say:
On his first marriage to Susan Deixler:
“I was in love with Susan. I just was not ready for marriage. I was out making music every night, sowing my wild oats — I was too young. I wasn’t ready to settle down.”
On meeting now husband Garry Kief in 1978:
“I knew that this was it. I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that...He’s the smartest person I’ve ever met in my life — and a great guy, too.”
On why he waited so long to come out:
“I’m so private. I always have been...I thought I would be disappointing [my fans] if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything. When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful — strangers commenting, ‘Great for you!’ I’m just so grateful for it.”
