People reports that the FDA issued a new rule on Friday banning antibacterial soaps. They released the following statement: "Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap or water. In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term." Plain soap and water are still the best defense against germs. And if you're a Purell addict, according to this in-depth article by Mother Jones, it looks like you're in the clear, although even that article comes to the consensus that plain old soap and water is still best.
