French actress Jeanne Moreau has passed away at the age of 89. French president Emmanuel Macron called her “a legend of cinema and theater … an actress engaged in the whirlwind of life with an absolute freedom.” Moreau rose to prominence in the mid-50s as part of the French new wave cinema, and starred in films including Jules and Jim, and Diary of a Chambermaid. She continued acting until recently. Moreau is survived by son Jerome Richard. Read her full obituary at Variety.
