"She did try to keep the family together for a long time, but she’s past that. Now it’s all about keeping him sober for the sake of the kids. She literally spent years trying to get him away from his addictions, but instead of being grateful, he always hated that she was trying “parent” him.
[The New Girlfriend] is the opposite. She tells him that he is an adult and he can make his own choices! He thinks that she is cool because she trusts him and gives him permission to do whatever he wants.
