Soil. It holds the answers and solutions to climate change. It’s pretty simple, soil captures carbon by drawing it back down into the earth and using it. Kind of like...magic. The problem is we don’t have enough healthy soil because land is used to produce single crops like soybeans and corn mostly to feed livestock, instead of mimicking nature with biodiversity. Regenerative agriculture is the solution. Healthy soil, biodiversity and helping shape the future of farming to incentive farmers to grow with this approach. We could change the world overnight. This isn’t a vegan/nonvegan conversation. In fact, we need grazing animals to make this happen. This is about soil health and mimicking nature to create an environment that is healthy enough for carbon sequestration. Soil won’t draw down carbon if it is dry, dusty dead dirt. We need rich soil, the kind you want to put your hands into. I remember sitting down with the great Allan Savory 6 years ago to talk about this. We went through different scenarios because I kept explaining that as someone who has a plant based diet I had a lot of questions. We learned a lot from each other and I think sitting with someone who views things differently always allows for the most growth. Animals play a huge role in soil health and we need them. The bottom line is the world will always have different view points and different eating preferences but we need to move into a space where we are more conscious about our decisions, our consumption, our approach and our solutions. We have one common goal which is to restore the planet, not strip her of everything she’s given us. We’re smart enough, we’re capable, it’s about connecting the dots between for-profits, corporate consciousness and regeneration...
