In case you don't want to sift through that whole Vanity Fair article, Joker director Todd Phillips, whose previous directing credits include Road Trip (starring Tom Green), the Starsky and Hutch remake that nobody watched, The Hangover, The Hangover Part II, and The Hangover Part III, said he made the Joker because "woke culture" made it too hard to make comedy movies. I'm sure lack of talent was also a huge hinderance.
