It is with sadness that I heard of Leonard Nimoy's death. I was lucky to spend many happy, inspiring hours with him. He won't be forgotten.

Yes tina, class acts. The nydaily news is big time dissing Shatner for not going to the funeral service. Shatner in Fla for a charity affair, of which im sure he is the main attraction and cant get away. I dont think it means you didnt care for someone if you dont go to their funeral. Idk, what do u guys think?
Is Nimoy Jewish (who are tropically buried quickly after death)? It's hard to rearrange schedules with such short notice. I don't blame Shatner for not being able to attend.
They're being too hard on him--he's already committed to this charity function, and he's already spoken out about the whole situation, saying he can't bail on these people at this point and how much he's mourning. Besides, the important part isn't necessarily going to someone's funeral; it's spending time with them while they're still here, and it sounds as if there was plenty of that.
TL;DR: Back off, Daily News--he was there when it really mattered.
What counts is your relationship while the person is alive. Whether or not you appear at the funeral is irrelevant (IMO). Show someone how much you love them while they're alive.
Well I believe the quick burial requirement in both Judaism and Islam comes from living in desert climates practically and historically speaking and yes that makes it very hard. Most people from out of town would be hard pressed to make it to a funeral service held so soon and in fact it is usually 24 hours but you can't have a funeral on the Sabbath so it was on Sunday.
I would hope that there would be a memorial service for those that were not able to make the service. These days so many people have family only funerals and then a memorial service later.
When my mother died we picked a date that would ensure all the people nearest and dearest would have more than enough notice for both the visitation and funeral. Courtesy works both ways.
I mean unless you knew the person was on their deathbed if you have a son or daughter who lives half way around the world, they are going to be hardpressed to make their own father's funeral in 48 hours let alone 24. Is there a religious exception for that?
I like his moniker @SirPatStew. Sad Mr Nimoy passed but he gave many years to the movies so we could all love him.
ReplyDeleteSirPatStew and Leonard Nimoy both class acts.

DeleteMeant no disrespect - "typically" not tropically.

DeleteThis is a really good read about his Yiddish background.
