Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French Open. In case you haven't been following this story, Naomi Osaka preemptively announced that she would not be taking part in any mid-Open press conferences because they have a negative effect on her mental well-being during the tournament, so she created a healthy boundary for herself and stated she would pay the fine assigned to players for not participating in press conferences mid-tournament. Well, this set off a shit storm for a couple of days with the organizers of the French Open making themselves look really bad. So finally Naomi was like "Fuck it, I'm out." Good for her for setting a healthy boundary for herself, and setting a precedent for other athletes to follow.
I enjoy watching Tennis, and never once have I watched a tennis press conference. If tournament organizers are only going to allow athletes to compete that participate is press conferences (which multiple athletes have stated have a negative effect on their mental health), there goes that sport!
Jonathan Liew says it best in The Guardian - "We're not the good guys: Osaka shows up problems of press conferences."
