Jared Leto covers the new issue of Empire magazine in full Joker regalia. He recently spoke about portraying The Joker; Us Weekly quotes him as follows:
“There was definitely a period of detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time, it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.”
Will Smith verifies that Leto stayed in character the entire time he was on set:
“Not a single word [was] exchanged off-camera. He was all in on the Joker."
Dear Actors in Hollywood: When it comes to playing the joker, why so serious? It's a comic book character. You don't need to go method. When Cesar Romero played the Joker, he couldn't even be bothered to shave his mustache for the role; he made them paint over it with white makeup. That's about the level of commitment you need in order to play the Joker.
