Joan acted in a few movies, did voice work as well. Of course she should have been. As should have Elaine Stritch. The music blaring with the artistic renderings sucked. The whole show ran WAY TOO LONG, so why they rushed the memorials and omitted clips was beyond me. Robin Williams deserved more.
It just seemed odd that they left Joan out because of her connection to the Oscars. Elaine Stritch I feel should have definitely been recognized, granted she was mostly TV, but still.
Thanks for the clarification. I just heard the end of a bit on the radio this morning, I quit watching by that point. I dont remember last year's memorial, glad he was included!
That's just wrong. Love her or hate her, the woman had a 50+ year career in showbiz. She deserves an acknowledgement for that reason alone. If some old director or set designer who hasn't done anything since the 1930's can be included then Joan definitely deserves a place.
I think Shirley was mentioned in last years broadcast if I recall correctly. Yes, Joan, as much as I think her main medium was TV, same for Elaine, both should have been mentioned. And while I appreciate art more than most, I would have preferred pictures instead of drawings. They really took away from the impact of the losses. I also noticed there were a lot more behind the scenes people that weren't as well known included. That sort of threw off the emotional part of the memorial as well.
I think Joan could/should have been mentioned somewhere, but it would not have been appropriate to put her in the "In Memoriam" segment, which I believe is reserved for Academy members. (Same goes for Stritch and Meshach Taylor.) Shirley Temple died 2/10/14, so was definitely included last year.
Stritch was a hoot in Out To Sea and she made her film bones by the time she did Farewell to Arms years earlier along with 2 dozen other films. I don't know what the Academy was thinking.
If the In Memoriam is reserved for Academy members than ok, but they could have done some kinda shoutout, right? I have to set my DVR for Fashion Police. This is going to be hard to watch for me. Oscar Fashion Police is going to be nothing without Joan.
The whole Oscar ceremony was such a yawn fest. I just don't even give an eff. And I feel like so many stahs weren't even on the red carpet.
I didn't watch it (watched Harry Potter instead and I freaking LOVE Hermione!), there was not really any appeal to this year's and I'll bet I could name who won. But omitting Joan, that was nuts. Twitter was blowing up about it but there was one that cracked me up, something along the lines of "they left out Joan Rivers. Her red carpet made you b*ches!"
I agree with the academy on this. She was t.v. not film. Same controversy erupted over Farrah Fawcett Majors... who was famous for tv but not her lousy appearance as chick number two in MYRA BRECKENRIDGE.
Look, Licia Albanese died as well, the pride of Bari Italy at 104. Yep, she has a movie credit (as an opera singer in an opera) but her body of work doesn't equal motion pictures.
Joan may have done voice over work and appeared in a couple movies, but her medium was indeed TV...and while may have been outside the Oscars every year, she wasn't there to discuss anything but fashion for a TV show. If she wasn't a paid member of the Screen Actor's Guild then of course they aren't going to acknowledge her. They leave that to the Emmys.

DeleteHow long did she cover the red carpet fashion? That connection alone should have included her
ReplyDeleteIt just seemed odd that they left Joan out because of her connection to the Oscars. Elaine Stritch I feel should have definitely been recognized, granted she was mostly TV, but still.
ReplyDeleteOf course she should have been included. They didn't show Meshach Taylor, either. :(
ReplyDeleteHeck yeah she should have been included. I heard they left out Harold Ramis also, that's messed up.
ReplyDeleteI think Harold died right before last years awards. So, he was remembered in last years ceremony. He's too big in cinema to have been forgotten.
DeleteI heard he was in last year's memorial.
DeleteThanks for the clarification. I just heard the end of a bit on the radio this morning, I quit watching by that point. I dont remember last year's memorial, glad he was included!
DeleteI didn't watch, but yeah, would've expected that Joan would've been mentioned.
ReplyDeleteReally, they would never win: people bitch if they spend too much time on the memorial or it's too short.
They definitely should have included her
ReplyDeleteOf course they shld hv included her. It was bitchy not to.

They missed several actors..did they mention Shirley temple? Hell, Hollywood would've folded if not for her films post depression
ReplyDeleteOMG, I forgot about her!
DeleteWait, She died in early February last year. Maybe she was in last year's memorial.
DeleteNo I believe she died in October.
DeleteNo, the other poster was right. She died in February 2014 and she was in last year's memorial.
