NBC Starts Planning Next Musical

After the success of Sound of Music and Peter Pan, NBC is continuing their new tradition of airing an annual live musical. Entertainment Weekly reports that the network has it nailed down to two options: The Music Man or The Wiz. NBC recently optioned the rights to both musicals. Which would you rather see?

  1. I thought they were going to do Wicked!

It'll probably be Music Man. Everyone does Music Man.

    2. @MR No your not...I abhor them with every cell of my being. That would be my own personal purgatory...being forced to watch musicals while having my gums scraped...no wait...I don't even need the gum scraping part. I even hate to admit I like Grease.

    3. Funny...hubs is the same way and we were just trying to pick a movie to go see today so I was watching trailers and we both were like "play the one for Into The Woods..."...watching...watching..."Damn well knock that one off the list"...dissapointed :(

    4. You are not along Meanie!! Musicals are horrible! My mother dragged me to "Into the Woods" when I was home for Christmas. Failed to mention it was a musical! I 10 minutes into the movie leaned over and said "this is a musical?!" My mother the sassy one that she is... Said "oh I didn't tell you that, with a smirk on her face!!" Grrr

    5. Not a fan... love opera but that's a Guido thing since certain ones were played constantly during my youth.

But the jazz hands, the belting it out, the terrible music.... honey, can we watch DIE HARD?

  4. I prefer to see a musical in the theatre live not on TV.

  5. Considering how cringeworthy both of their earlier attempts were, maybe they should just NOT.

  8. For me, it depends on the musical. When I was a kid and watched Annie, I remember thinking, "What? People randomly break into song while doing chores and everyone joins in and there's dancing and everyone knows the lyrics?" Musicals are meant to be a theatre experience.

That said, I liked "Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Sweeney Todd" (the Depp/Bonham Carter one). I refuse to see Les Mis, as someone who was involved in theatre in HS and college, I can sing it in my sleep and no one deserves the torture of me singing, let alone in the middle of the night.

Does anyone else remember from many years ago a TV show that was basically a knockoff of Annie but with a bunch of girls adopted by a rich guy? I can't remember the name of it!

  10. I have seen quite a few live musicals now that I think back on it and I would say I enjoyed every single one, loved some more than others of course but never had a bad experience except seating in some of older theatres was interesting. We bought scalper tickets to Miss Saigon in London UK not realizing we were sitting near an obstruction. We were second row balcony but the first row has it worse they had to really bend over the balcony to see the stage because of the lights on the balcony and then we had to bend over them but it was worth it, the singing of Lea Salonga was stunning. She was stunning.

My very first was La Cages aux Folles on Broadway and we couldn't stop singing and doing a chorus line from it all night long so I loved that feeling you get from seeing it live.

  13. I prefer a good rock opera like Jesus Christ Superstar, Pink Floyd: The Wall or Tommy. Not typically a fan of musicals but I do like Victor/Victoria & Sound of Music. Julie Andrews is ALWAYS a classic.

  14. I'm on the fence with musicals and my husband absolutely abhors them. What ever one they pick could they at least choose people with singing talent over being famous? Like The Sounfd of Music original movie? Otherwise it's a waste of time. People WILL watch an old favorite updated with lesser knowns if they can at least carry a tune.

  15. I love musicals. Well, most of them. I saw Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria on Broadway and it was so good. I thought The Sound of Music didn't work for live TV. I DVRd Peter Pan, but still haven't watched it yet after reading the reviews. I'll probably watch Grease or at least DVR it and never watch.

  16. I wouldn't watch either of these options. I like a good musical and I've never seen Cats, so that would be a great option! If they want to stick to classics, they should do Oliver.

  17. I thought "Peter Pan Live!" (WTF was with that unnecessary exclamation mark they used?) was kind of a bomb? I know it didn't do nearly as well as the "Sound of Music Live" did. Surprised they're doing another musical.

  18. Krissie- they may get lousy reviews, but they get good ratings and sponsors are lining up to reach that family audience! I dont mind it; its better than half the crap on tv already.
