It Pays To Be An Uber Driver

According to a study released by Uber yesterday, drivers make on average $19/hour. The Hollywood Reporter states that Uber's drivers also work less hours, and earn more per hour than professional chauffeurs and cab drivers; their average is $12.90/hour. The report also showed that 71% of drivers reported having better income from driving for Uber, and 74% of drivers use Uber to aid in their income alongside their other earnings.

  1. "The car service phone app allows independent contractors to utilize their personal vehicles to transport app users who hire and pay them via Uber through cell phones, diminishing the need for cards or cash, unlike taxis and chauffeurs."

...aaaaand how long will it be before Lifetime makes a movie about an unfortunate Uber driver who had the murderous customer?

    1. @Bacon Ranch- giiirl, I think it's the other way around that will make it into a movie first. There are some not so innocent Uber drivers out there.

    1. They must have to pay insurance through the roof, no?

    2. Gina I will bet you none of those people on uber driving their own cars are informing their insurance company of their commercial activities, can't wait for the first law suits.

    3. We were talking about the insurance angle yesterday - no way would I ride in an Uber - if he's in a wreck and hasn't informed his insurance company, they won't pay. OR - if you're driving in your own vehicle and are in an accident with an Uber driver who is actually driving a passenger and the wreck is his fault, his insurance company still won't pay. (this assumes the Uber driver's insurance company doesn't know what the driver is doing). So unless you have uninsured motor coverage, you'll be out of luck. This is going to end badly.

  3. And not surprising there are at count 27 other companies about to launch something similar to Über.

My friend's husband is driving for Uber because he was laid off after heart surgery and no one wants to hire a 62 yr old man but he can't retire yet. Not all unicorns and rainbows for drivers out there.

  4. Here's a funny story told to me from my friend in Israel. Apparently companies will lease a car for their employees. It's very common as part of a pay package in Israel.

Well these companies we're seeing cars with extremely high mileage after the people had moved on. Yup, you guessed it. The were using them for taxi income after hours.

    1. A couple of days after Thanksgiving I had a sprained knee. I also was out of smokes (I am so shallow) and my brother had my car because he was out of town at some convention. So I called a cab and the guy arrived and took me to the nearest store. The total (round trip) was 6.00. I felt so guilty for taking up his time (..you know, him doing his job and all) I tipped him 6. So I would say that cab drivers can make pretty good bank. Or maybe not everyone is as gullible as I am (Of course he did the obligatory "I had to work on Thanksgiving, away from my family" thing. Though I'm pretty sure his country doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving)

  6. I feel bad for the taxi drivers because in Toronto a licence cost an arm and leg and their revenue is regulated by the municipality.

  7. This Uber driver thing seems to me like a slightly more organized way of hitch hiking. Then again when you would thumb a ride, it was free. This shit sounds scary as hell. No way would I call Joe blow for a ride. Remember what happened when they deregulated the airlines? Nothing good.
