Slice of Cake from Will & Kate's 2011 Wedding Sells for $7,500

It may have been three years ago, but the Royal Wedding is still making news after Julien's Auctions sold off a slice of Will & Kate's wedding cake for $7,500. The auction house bought the piece of fruit cake from a wedding guest and expected it to sell for $1,000-$2,000.

Julien's Auctions previously sold a piece of cake from Charles and Diana's wedding for $6,000. The slice of cake was 27 years old at the time of the auction.

  2. Kno- if not, they can replace it with entemens cake, lol. Fruitcake, eh? Imagine going to a wedding and getting a rock hard slab of fruitcake! Yuck! I have yet to meet the person who actually likes fruitcake, those morbid blocks from hell.

    1. That's what I was thinking - can I photoshop myself into a Will & Kate reception photo and sell a piece of fruitcake for $7K? Sounds doable.

    2. @auntliddy, my mom loves Japanese fruitcake! She and her sister both do. I have no idea why...maybe they were brainwashed as children or something...but they are the only two people I know who like it. If my mom gets one, my dad's like, "Oh, good. A firestarter log."

    3. I'm convinced there are only 1000 fruitcakes in the entire world that just keep getting re-wrapped & resold to the same people every year. Same with panettone.

    4. @cheesgrater15- I think we have the same sister. She's probably eating cupcakes right now.

    5. Fruitcake used to be more traditional for weddings here, as the idea was to hold onto the top tier for the first child's christening.
Dry helps with longevity but they're not necessarily Rock hard and bone dry. I have two recipies I use and the Peggy Porschen one in particular is incredibly moist and I'm told they're lovely. I've no clue as I won't touch the stuff - I love baking the but won't eat raisins, sultanas or currants. Though I did nibble the crumb around the raisins and it was nice.

  3. I own a pretty busy bakery/cake shop and I've never had a single person even inquire about a fruit cake

    1. I'll do it...."So Gina - approximately how old is your fruitcake?"

  4. What kind of preservatives are they using in cake to make it last 27 years? Yuck.

  5. Someone gave us a fruitcake at Christmas around the year 2000. We threw it in the freezer and forgot about it. We found it the next Christmas and set it out on the counter. After Christmas was over, we threw it back into the freezer. Since then it's become a tradition. On Christmas Eve we take the fruitcake out and put it on the counter. When Christmas is over, it goes back into the freezer. It's 14 years old now. I don't know why we do it but it's gotten really fun.

  7. I've never had fruitcake, but some of the recipes I've seen look kinda good. I mean if you had some that was made by someone who knows what they're doing. The stuff from the store is probably nothing but chemicals. Then again if you don't like candied fruit I wouldn't bother.

  8. After further investigation, I think Jamaican fruitcake is the one for me. Lots of RUM!

  9. LOL @BrendaL, that's awesome!

My sister saved the top layer of her wedding cake in the freezer. For their first anniversary, they threw a little dinner party to celebrate and we all got to eat the cake - it was still pretty good! Of course whoever bought that cake will never eat it. They'll glaze it and put a bell jar over it and put on the shelf next to the Princess Di memorial plate and the super creepy Baby Prince George doll, right under the framed magazine cover of Will and Kate's wedding.
