Fashion Police Fight After Racist Comments

In case you missed the Fashion Police recap of The Oscars, this happened:

Zendaya responded to the comments with the following post:

And Kelly Osbourne is firing back as well.

Us Weekly quotes a source as saying "Kelly is really upset about this. She really is friends with Zendaya. They both were Material Girl spokesmodels. She already has reached out to her to make sure she was clear that she had nothing to do with it. She doesn't condone Giuliana's dumb comment." Kelly has apparently threatened to quit Fashion Police over the situation. Some people were trying to attribute the weed comment to Osbourne, but it's clear from the video that it was Kathy Griffin who said it.

  1. I'm really upset about Kelly's spelling.

    1. I know, right? I can't believe her spelling is so terrible. I wonder if it's from the drug use.

    2. @ethorne we're contactually not allowed to care about Kelly

    3. Her father is so well read. I'm really surprised by her bad spelling.

  2. I'm confused. If Kathy Griffin said it, why was Giuliana the one who got raked over the coals and apologized?

Either way, it was a stupid comment.

  3. Okay, I get what Zendaya is saying. I don't think it was meant to be a racist comment, however as Guiliana did say in her apology, she understands that it may have been taken that way. The show is meant to be funny. My issue here is KELLY....Kelly threatening to quit the show unless G apologizes? Kathy is the one who made the weed comment. Kelly is "friends" with everyone. What the hell is a 30 year old doing being friends with an 18 year old? Remember when Miley Cyrus was "off limits" for a few episodes (back when Joan was still with us) because it made Kelly upset that they made fun of her "friend"? NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOU KELLY.

    1. Oh, Gina. Everyone cares about Kelly. Everyone who makes purple hair dye, anyway.

  4. Plus, Kelly O. is the last person I'd take fashion advice from, what with her goth gear and purple Mohawk. Please. It was edgy in 2006, now move on. You're a grown ass woman, not a stroppy teenager.

    1. God Save the Queen was released in 1977. Mohawks and purple hair were edgy 30 years ago. Boy of London clothing line sprung into being in 1976.

Next subject - I could absolutely 100% hear Joan Rivers making the weed/patchouli remark along with many other typical Joan comments and digs. You're at the Oscars and guess what? They're called the fashion police and there's gonna be shit they like, and shit they don't like. Deal with it. If you don't like it tell them to fuck off and move on.

I am sick to death of Kelly Osbourne constantly reminding the WORLD that she's friends with every famous person on earth. Hun you knew what the job was when you accepted the position and everytime you cash that paycheck.

Maybe this is all just a ruse so she can "quit" before she gets fired (if her drug abuse is as bad as it's been said lately). I think they should just cancel the damn show. Joan was the show and as much as I love Kathy Griffin, this does not seem to be a good match. Kelly O. needs to STFU and GTFO!!!

  5. Sit down, Kelly. This doesn't involve you. Rancid and Zendaya's PR team have made amends.

  6. This is still on my DVR and I need to watch, but I would think all involved are just happy that people are actually talking about Fashion Police. I don't think Kathy G is the best choice for host. She is so irrelevant with her inane comments.

Agree that Kelly O needs to get over herself. Giuliana did apologize. It's kinda funny because Joan made waaaaaaaaay more politically incorrect statements on Fashion Police but she would never apologize. She would just tell you to fuck off.

The show makes fun of everybody. Isn't that the point.

  7. Off topic a bit but I had no idea Ledisi was in this movie. This woman, imma tell y'all now, is wonderful. Saw her at a small club in SF (with the Braxton brothers no less) and even though she had a cold she blew the doors off. She's primarily a singer and was on the tribute album "We Love Ella". Okay that's all. I get pretty worked up I over good jazz singers.

  8. I know lots of my friends here enjoy this show, but really its solly drivel. Who knew zenadyia was on some mission from god to pump up the love for locs?( as she calls them). Her reply was very well written and thought out. I never think about anyones hair standing for amything, so all i wld think is oo, shes pretty. Ranic was just riffin' and touched a tender point accidentally. She apologized. She didnt condemn locs before the UN, and call for the incarceration of them!!!!! So let us let it rest and not beat a dead horse.

  9. I do want to add that Zendya's English is waaay better than Kelly's. Who does need to STFU.

  10. I think this is a big fake mess of nobodygivesashit.

  11. I think when you see these long condemnations/or apologies, it's actually not the celeb who writes them..probably crafted by pr people, studio or network peons, lawyers, etc. This sounds like a lot of nothing..perhaps kelli is trying to make herself relevant.

  12. Kelly is such a brat. It wasn't a racist comment at all and I agree with everyone that it would have been overlooked if Joan had said it. I was at a show the other night and there were a ton of white hippy kids with dreads that were smoking weed and smelled like other hippy scents (not that I think weed is a hippy smell per say). There was no racist or ignorant connotation and G was just making a dumb joke. Kelly just wants to be relevant. They should have let her go.

  13. This is on right now. Kelly O has to be the most annoying twat ever. Her laugh makes me cringe and I can't stand the way she talks- really slow- like she's thinking out these brilliant (in her head) shit nuggets that fall out of her mouth.

  14. Lotta she may say exquisite, but I sereiously doubt she could spell it!

  16. Love this thread!

This actually is a big deal with some people. I was reading an article on Buzzfeed where five different Buzz staffers tried "simple" Pinterest hair tutorials. One of the staffers was a black lady (when the others were describing their hair as curly, straight, long, etc., hers was "I am black" - I cracked up) and she got a LOT of crap in the articles from people saying her hair was relaxed. She said over and over that it wasn't, and she was still being slammed for not being natural and therefore not representing black people. Guiliana would have zero idea what patchouli oil would smell like. Come on, it's Guiliana.

  17. Why do people have to have relaxed hair?
When mine is relaxed one side is glued to my face & the other is at a 90 degree angle.

  18. I saw the show and I don't get the problem. Zendaya did not look her best and Guiliana made a point of showing her finer fashion moments and mentioning that most of the time Zendaya was flawless. But I agreed with GR - her weave was overpowering and looked a bit well cheap to me, all weaves are not created equal It is the Oscars after all. . At most I could see taking offence at an insinuation one was high on weed if one was not. And for the life of me what is Zendaya famous for, does she sing or something? I see the name but never what she does to even be a topic of conversation. Given the things said at Fashion Police this is as tame as it comes so I don't know what Kelly's problem is. Go already.

    1. PS it had to be a weave or wig because she had short hair just a week ago, as shown on FP. Oh and I am too lazy to look her up I know.

  19. Can someone tell me how the smell of patchouli and weed is racist? I think I am missing some bigger point. Wouldn't the people who took it as racist be the ones who are racist for making that assumption? I am so confused or too old or something. I happen to wear patchouli perfume and don't smoke weed.

  21. I'd love to smoke weed.
I also love putting patchouli oil in a burner. With sandalwood it is sereiously fabulous!

  22. What did patchouli oil and the sticky icky ever do to get dragged through the mud with this?!?!

@Ms Cool- The problem is that these comments are seen as linking a traditionally black hairdo with assumptions that their wearers necessarily engage in deviant behaviors. It is also likely part of a bigger phenomenon - the policing women's bodies in general and particularly those of women of color. For example, think about the public discourse and uproar over Blue Ivy's hair.

In any case, there is a long standing academic tradition of analyzing the racial relations in America through the lens of the history of "black hairdos." Maxine Leeds Craig is the most famous for this, but many prominent black feminists like Angela Davis have addressed the topic. (I also highly recommend watching Chris Rock's documentary Good Hair).

Unstraightened hair has been culturally coded as unattractive and dirty; which has led black women to go through brutal lengths for beauty. Starting in the 1960s, black activists organized a great deal of mobilization efforts towards challenging Caucasian beauty standards and rearticulating that "black is beautiful." Since then, natural hair has been framed as the ultimate symbol of black pride and unity. So in those ways, the comments are seen as racist and insensitive. Especially when we consider that US employers can still legally discriminate against people for wearing dreadlocks since hairstyles are a mutable trait and certain jobs can set grooming requirements. Six Flags is infamous for this. That's the real story here. Kick Kelly to the curb and let's call it a day.

    3. Thanks so much!!!! I would never have associated the hairdo with a deviant behavior. Your answer articulated such a thoughtful knowledgeable response. I really appreciate it. I didn't understand the uproar and worried that I was too ignorant, which I was.

    4. It's all good @Ms Cool. One can see how it may have been meant as a harmless joke about how stoners are all a bunch of dreadlocked hippies. However, it is very hard to decouple Guiliana/Kathy's original intent from the broader context of history, sexism and racism. I guess it's easier for me to see as a "joke" because I'm not black and I've never had to go through the horrific process of hair relaxing. But I can see how a young girl is rightfully mortified when her hair is publicly ridiculed and I comprehend why people are offended.

  24. Oh plus in the 80's i worked with a girl with long braids. I happened to see on tv a news show about hiw employers dont like braids and discourage them in corporate world. So i asked her if anyone gave her crap about her braids, and was shocked when she said yes, a coupla perps, some black told her how it cld prevent her from getting promoted. I was blown away!! I cldnt believe anyone wld care about someone elsez hairdo, as long as it clean! I still dont get the problem with locks or braids or that anyone other than person that has them shld care. I personally wldnt hv them cos too much work! Lol

  27. I watched the show and was stunned that this became such a big deal. The show is called "Fashion Police". Zendaya is very thin and had on a couture gown. The locks were fake and they could have been done smaller so that they went with the gown.

The same people clutching their pearls about the insult to Zendaya are the same people who were saying out of the side of their mouths that Beyonce should do something with Blue Ivy's hair.

I think LadyH's post is on the money about why people would get all bent out of shape because of the perceived insult so I'll stop now.
