Instagram Purges Fake Accounts
Recently, many celebrities saw their number of followers drop when Instagram scrubbed their servers of spam accounts. Page Six reports that followers could be bought for relatively cheap: $30 for 2,500. Not all of the celebrities that lost followers paid for spam accounts, but when Kim Kardashian loses 1.3 million in the purge, one has to wonder...
Yeah but unfortunately Kim is the #1 followed even after the purge. Bieber is now 2nd. Is Taylor Swift not on instagram? I would think she would be number 1?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they only purged a small portion of those Kartrashians accounts. Got to be loads more that are fake.
DeleteI read somewhere that after spam accounts were deleted, biebs lost 3.5M so now even Beyonce has more followers than him, losing only about 800k followers.. so it's Kim, Beyonce then the toxic biebs
DeleteI hate when fake/spam accounts like my Instagram. I usually delete and block them

ReplyDeleteWhat is the purpose of fake accounts? How do they benefit from high numbers? To seem more popular? If so, that is incredibly lame...I can't even take that seriously.
ReplyDeleteI obviously have a lot of questions this morn/noon! lol
DeleteMany celebs structure their product placement deals based on the number of social media followers they have so it helps them make more money (from shoes companies, bag companies, etc.) if it looks like they have more followers than they really do.
DeleteMornin/ afternoon Meanie! How's the weather there?
DeleteGood noon, luv! :) It's a bit chilly, low 40s. Supposed to be up to 70 (rainy, though) by Wednesday, Xmas is predicted to be 55. VA sure beats MI, for sure!
DeleteAre you ready for Xmas?
I don't get it either.
DeleteNever underestimate the power of numbers. From a PR perspective, the greater your social platform (i.e., the higher the amount of people you "reach" with your words), the greater your selling power. That YouTube girl Zoe Sugg (Zoella) sold a record 78k books (her first) in one week, and her popularity was based purely on the numbers.
ReplyDeletePeople are acting all shocked that Zoe's book was ghostwritten - DUH, 99% of celeb books are ghostwritten. I've done a few ghostwriting jobs - it's not like you're making things up, you're simply transcribing the words into a form that is readable and pleasant. Celebs are rarely writers (and writers are rarely celebs).
i wonder how many of katy perry and leann rimes were purged
ReplyDeleteas well as the real hw
Thanks Patti and Seven. Although I have a (little visited) Twitter, I'm not savvy on it at all.
ReplyDeleteawww
ReplyDeleteThat’s bad news for stars who either attract large numbers of spam accounts or in some cases pad their followers by adding fake ones.
Many stars’ accounts are handled by a social media team, explains Michael Heller, CEO of Talent Resources. “It’s very inexpensive, so that’s why many social media teams [buy followers].” Websites can charge just $30 for 2,500.
Whether the faux followers are paid for or not, the result of Instagram’s fake-account purge has seen celebs’ numbers plummet.
On Thursday, we noticed about 1.3 million of Kim Kardashian’s vanished. Rihanna’s decreased by about 1.2 million. Katy Perry’s went down 300,000. Even Oprah lost 100,000.
“It’s bad for a celeb for many reasons,” Heller said. “It’s embarrassing,” plus “they also could lose lots of money.”
Brands pay up to $100,000 for posts and negotiate fees based on followers. Bravo’s Andy Cohen tweeted, “I lost 20k followers in the #InstagramPurge . . . Twitter, next?”
No fair. How do I purge my life of certain celebs?
ReplyDeletethere has been a huge uptick in spam accounts on ig, that i've noticed, anyway. Glad they're gone, I find them hella creepy.
ReplyDeleteBWAHAHAHAHA. That is all.
ReplyDeleteI find that hilarious! You have to PAY people to be your friends. I understand why they do it but how embarrassing when you get busted.
ReplyDeleteIt's sort of like how that guy Pewdiepie (or however it's spelled) on Youtube has something like 20 million subs but no video with over 5 million views and makes over 10 million bucks a year off of it.
ReplyDeleteRowdy : what the what??
DeleteSo, am I a celebrity now coz I kinda lost 56 followers. Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was hilarious. I'm waiting for the Twitter purge.
ReplyDeleteI was on twitter. Highlights for me? Anti joke apple stole my tweet, and a rather aserbic tweet I made about him was re-tweeted by Irvine Welsh.
