Commitment Tips from Katherine Heigl

Back when Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelly were dating, Kelly was a bit slow to commit. Instead of waiting for him to make up his mind, Heigl called Kelly while he was on tour and told him that she had to know where they stood, because she was thinking of pursuing something with John Mayer. According to Us Weekly, the ploy worked, and the couple will have been married for five years as of December.

  1. No sure who was luckier in that near miss - Heigl or Mayer.

  2. Nothing like bullying someone into something as trivial as, oh I don't know...marriage.

    1. asking where you stand is bullying?

    2. Scarcity is a classic sales technique. He could have just as easily said 'have fun with John'.

    2. he could have told her to go for it with Mayer. Don't see the problem here.

  8. I highly doubt Mayer was interested in her. Smart cookie for getting her man to commit! Haha! Some men just need that extra push.

  9. Kelly always had the option to say - go for it with Mayer, I'm just not ready for marriage. Forcing a guy to commit when he's not ready can backfire in a big way (in many ways).

    1. exactly. if Kelly wasn't into her he could have just said go for it with Mayer. Would have been an easy way to get out of it.

  11. Meh. She didn't just cheat. She gave him the option. He made the choice. Doesn't seem like bullying to me.

  12. This was on an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. Maybe that's where she got the idea.
In the episode: Back in the day, Frank found out that Marie was going to make dinner for a guy they both knew. He suddenly found himself jealous, which then translated into, "If I can't stand the thought of losing her, then maybe I should commit to her." ("When Marie cooks, it's special, and I didn't want her doing that for another guy. From that day on, she only cooks for ME!"' or something along those lines.) It worked for them, married 40+ years, and now Marie was trying to set the older son Robert's long term string-along girlfriend Amy up with another guy to see whether Robert also felt that he didn't want to lose her and would finally either commit or let her move on, but to quit stringing her along (it had been years). It didn't work as well, because he found out about the ploy. Turns out Marie's dinner years before was also just a ploy, the other man she invited to a special dinner was gay and she knew it, she just wanted to see if Frank would realize his true feelings, which he did.

And that's what KHeigl did. She gave him the scenario of possibly losing her, and let him figure out what that meant to him. Risky and manipulative, but sometimes people need a nudge to realize that simply coasting along is not making progress.

Disclaimer: there is domestic violence in the episode that is played for comedy that is not funny. Aside from that, I am conflicted about their scheme. I see its value but I also see its manipulative side.
